1.) Create a road map. Plan out what you want to be on your website and what is its intended purpose. Do you want to drive leads, capture information, serve as a reference point... Having a road map available for a designer to review will provide you to ask different designers or businesses for estimates, show you understand the process, and help prevent any shortcomings.

2.) Find at least 3 websites that you like and ask the web designer for projects they have completed that may relate to what you want your finalized project to look like. This can help filter out inexperienced designers who might deliver a half finished project.

3.) Ask questions! Three must have questions for a potential designer are: “Are your websites fully responsive, (mobile friendly)?”, “Can you provide a reference from a previous client and example?”, and “How many revisions do I receive with the initial design?”.
