They seem identical…

But only one knows BSL.

This fun short film explores the difference between sign-interpreted and sign-presented content.

👉With new accessibility rules on the way for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and other major streamers, this conversation has never been more important.

🗣️ This is your chance to have your say.
📌 The Ofcom consultation closes in just one week.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and other major streamers will be required to provide signed content in the UK, eventually rising to 5%.

But what will count as “signed”? BSL interpretation added to English-language content, programmes made directly in BSL, or a mixture of both? 👀

Before the rules are finalised, Ofcom has opened a public consultation. This carousel highlights selected questions that may be relevant to the 5% BSL proposals and some topics you may wish to consider.

You do not have to answer every question. You can respond to some or all of them, in your own words and based on your own experience. Please read Ofcom’s proposals before submitting your response.

There is no single Deaf opinion. Ofcom wants to know what you think.

⏰ Consultation closes at 5pm on 7 August 2026.

BSL AT THE CENTRE OF OUR SCREENS. NOT JUST IN THE CORNER. 👀

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and other major streaming services will be legally required to provide signed content in the UK.

Ofcom’s proposed implementation begins at 1.5% signed content, eventually rising to 5%. This is potentially huge for BSL signers in the UK. 🙌

But one question really matters:

Signed how?

The quota can include programmes made in English with a BSL interpreter added afterwards. This is known as ‘sign-interpreted content’.

Or it can include programmes made directly in BSL, with Deaf actors, Deaf characters and Deaf creatives telling our own stories. This is known as ‘sign-presented content’s

Both have value. But they are not the same. And when you look at our television heritage, it makes sense.

Sign On. Vee TV. See Hear. BSL Zone. LumoTV.

Then look at the recent success of **Reunion** on the BBC and Code of Silence on ITV. 🎬

Imagine more of the same, but on Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc! BSL belongs at the centre of our screens. Not only as an interpretation of English added in the corner.

You may agree. You may disagree. That is exactly why Ofcom needs to hear from you.

This is a rare opportunity to influence how the new rules work and make sure the future of BSL on streaming delivers real access, representation, employment and choice.

You can complete the online form, email Ofcom or submit your response directly in BSL. ✍️

The consultation closes at 5pm on 7 August 2026.

Thank you Sam Neill for being Dr Alan Grant, one of the best role-models a young boy could have: unshakeably nerdy, 🤓 sometimes grumpy and prickly, 😩yet, when all hell breaks loose; also protective, kind, and calm in a crisis. When I was a boy I identified more with Tim, but on recent rewatches, it’s Alan I relate to now. Thanks for the thrills and laughs. Rest in Peace Sam 🦖🦕

True self-acceptance
is standing in the desert of life,
under its vast skies,
and realising that everyone
has been standing on the same ground
all along.

The lonely desert was never the truth -
only the illusion created by believing
you had to become something
before you could belong.

The World Cup is truly special 🌍⚽ Watching every match, I’ve been moved by listening to fans and players sing their national anthems before kick-off. Those are songs full of colour, culture, memory and pride.

And my latest special interest has been looking up the anthems, translating their meanings, and discovering a little more about each country through the song it chooses to sing towards the world, on the grandest stage of all.

I was amazed at some contrasts. The French anthem 🇫🇷 calls its citizens to arms: fierce, revolutionary, urgent. Yet the English anthem 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, by contrast, is a prayer to God to preserve their ruler: solemn, ceremonial, an anthem of supplication.

To celebrate, here are the national anthems of the 8 World Cup quarter-finalists, translated into English.

🇫🇷 La Marseillaise: English Translation

Arise, children of the Fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
Against us, tyranny’s
Bloody banner is raised,
The bloody banner is raised.
Do you hear in the countryside
The roar of those fierce soldiers?
They are coming into your arms
To cut the throats of your sons, your companions!

To arms, citizens!
Form your battalions!
Let us march, let us march!
May impure blood
Water our furrows!

🇲🇦 Hymne Chérifien: English Translation

Root of the free,
Rising place of the lights,
Forum of glory and its protector,
May you remain its forum and protector.

May you live among the homelands
As a symbol of grandeur,
Filling every heart,
Remembered by every tongue.

With soul,
With body,
Your youth has risen,
Answering your call.

In my mouth and in my blood,
Your love has stirred as light and fire.

My brothers, come!
Striving for the heights,
We make the world witness
That here we live
By the motto:

God, Homeland, King.

🇪🇸 Marcha Real: English Translation

Spain’s national anthem has no official lyrics.

La Marcha Real, or The Royal March, is one of the few national anthems in the world without official words.

It sounds formal, bright and regal: brass-led, steady, proud, and almost processional. There is no em

In October 2025, I was asked to film Thomas & Honesty’s wedding. 🎥✨ Instead of a traditional guest book, they had a wonderful idea: collecting video messages from their guests.

While editing them, it dawned on me that the perfect way to present this was to have those messages emerge from a physical video book. After all, video is the natural home of sign language. 🤟

The beautiful video book itself was crafted by , a fantastic Scottish-based company that offers a wide range of video books. I really can’t recommend them highly enough! 📖🤍

A massive thank you to Thomas and Honesty for trusting me with this vision, and a huge shoutout to for putting in the work to capture so many amazing video messages on the day! 🎬🥂

Bristol is officially a scorched wasteland... okay, not quite, but it definitely feels like it out there today! 🥵

Swipe across the carousel to see how I turned a sweltering day into a full-on dystopian scene.

If you want to recreate the look, here is the exact AI workflow and the prompts I used 👉🏼

1️⃣: The Still Image
Took a quick selfie, then ran it through Google’s Nano Banana 2 using this prompt:

“Add overheated dystopian scene- trees are barren, bus is overheating and on fire , lots of sand has covered the roads with road markings / pavement showing up in places and everywhere. Sand is blowing wind, reducing visibility. Realistic, gritty, cinematic”

2️⃣: The Motion Pass
Recorded a quick reference video of me walking in the intense heat, then used Seedance 2.0 to transform the environment with this prompt:

“Use reference as your reference video for exact movement of the man. Do not alter his physical appearance or movements, do not change anything about the man’s movement. Alter the background surroundings in the street to be more dystopian/ overheated, sanded down, with swirling misty sand blowing in the breeze. Use as your reference. You can add sand onto the man’s white tshirt. The whole environment is really scorched and parched.”
