We build websites, apps, systems & event technology for some of the world's most impactful organizations.

Creative2 was founded in 2009 by John Felts and Shawn McGuinn with the goal of offering innovative technology and communication services while also creating a family oriented culture that is sustainable and allows team members flexibility for personal lives and pursuits. As a service provider, Creative2's goals are two-fold:

-To develop systems that help organizations improve internal productivity and efficiency, ultimately affecting their bottom lines.

-To work with clients to craft creative communication solutions that break through the noise - reaching customers and stakeholders in more compelling, effective ways. At the community level, Creative2 seeks to partner with nonprofits, churches and other organizations around Virginia to support and provide education services that encourage and equip individuals with work skills that are relevant in our ever-changing, globalized economy.

When Custom Software Beats Another Subscription, pt. 3/3

Build vs. Buy Is the Wrong Question

For most companies, off-the-shelf analytics is still the right call. They're fast to set up, reliable, and cover the basics without any heavy lifting. There’s no prize for going custom early just to say you did.

This isn't really a build vs. buy debate. It’s about whether your current tools are generating more workarounds than actual insight. That’s a harder thing to notice than it sounds, because workarounds don’t usually show up as one big obvious failure. They show up as a slow accumulation of small ones.

A spreadsheet someone maintains on the side to track a metric the dashboard can’t show. A report that gets stitched together manually every month because two systems won’t talk to each other. A question from leadership that always gets the same answer: “we can’t pull that.”

Every company hits that inflection point at a different stage, but the pattern is same. The problem stops being about collecting more data and starts being about organizing the data you already have in a way that reflects how the business runs. When that shift happens, more subscriptions don’t fix it. You just get the same fragmented picture with an extra login.

So instead of asking what to subscribe to next, the better question might be: would something built for us specifically just work better?

Where are you in this? Still scaling with SaaS, or starting to feel the ceiling?

When Custom Software Beats Another Subscription, pt. 2/3

Building custom doesn't mean torching your existing stack. Most of the time, you keep what works and only go custom where nothing else actually fits.

That's exactly where we landed when evaluating analytics tools for a unique client project. Simple criteria: it had to live inside the client's infrastructure, keep their data fully theirs, and be simple enough that people would actually open it.

We got close a few times. Google Analytics and Adobe Analytics had solid reporting, but data left the client's environment. Umami nailed self-hosting, but its privacy-first approach meant losing visitor detail clients actually needed. None of these are bad products — they just weren't built for this problem.

So we started from scratch and built around how the client actually works, instead of asking them to bend around someone else's product.

One example: tracking how long someone actually watches a livestream. Most tools lose the thread here because browsers don't reliably report when a session ends. The fix was a heartbeat — a quiet ping to the server every few seconds confirming the viewer is still there. Small detail. Way more accurate picture of real engagement.

That's what custom is actually for. Not rebuilding what already exists — solving the problem nobody else bothered to.

When Custom Software Beats Another Subscription, pt. 1/3

At some point, your analytics dashboard stops answering your actual questions. Not because the software is bad — because it was never built for you.

SaaS tools democratized data. For most companies, that still makes sense. But scaling can push you beyond what those tools are designed to do. Marketing wants sharper questions answered. Ops wants reporting that actually connects across tools instead of living in five different tabs. Leadership wants a number that flat-out doesn't exist in the platform.

When your team starts duct-taping workarounds together just to get an answer, that's the tell. It's not a data problem anymore — it's a ceiling.

This Saturday, August 29, come join us at the Washington Nationals Faith Day in support of our partner, Youth For Tomorrow. Faith Day combines the excitement of a Nationals game with a family-friendly Christian celebration. The Nats take on the Marlins at Nationals Park and part of the proceeds of every special Faith Day ticket sold will be donated to Youth For Tomorrow, helping support at-risk youth and families across our region.

This is a unique opportunity to showcase YFT’s life-changing work to thousands of people in downtown DC. We'll see you there!

Client Spotlight: DiscoverE

DiscoverE is a nonprofit working to expand access to engineering education by connecting students, educators, and families with STEM opportunities. Their main challenge wasn't finding STEM events but building a database that could stay current without relying on organizations to manually submit every event.

Creative2 designed DiscoverE's website and developed Engineering Navigator, a custom AI-powered platform that automatically discovers STEM events across the web.

The system searches for events, evaluates whether they're actually relevant, extracts the important details, and adds approved opportunities to a searchable database, instead of relying on organizations to manually submit events.

Users can search by location, grade level, engineering discipline, and date to quickly find opportunities that matter to them. Behind the scenes, the platform was built to work with multiple AI providers, so DiscoverE isn't locked into a single model or vendor as the technology evolves.

This is what AI looks like when it's applied to a real operational problem: less manual work, better data, and a platform that scales.

Our Work: Custom Systems

When standard software doesn't solve the problem, we build what does.

Creative2 creates custom technology solutions, from web applications and CRM systems to tailored software platforms, designed around the unique needs of your business. We help organizations streamline processes, improve user experiences, and build more efficient systems that support long-term growth.

How We Work:
Every project starts with understanding your business: your goals, challenges, workflows, and vision. We take the time to learn what you need so we can build technology that solves the problems instead of just adding another tool.

From strategy through development, we work closely with your team using an agile approach. We break complex projects into manageable phases, deliver working solutions along the way, and adapt quickly based on feedback.

The result is technology built around your business, your users, and your goals, with a foundation that can grow and evolve over time.

This is what custom technology looks like when it solves real business challenges. Check our process out here: https://creative2.com/capabilities/custom-systems/

AI Is Not Just Plug-and-Play, pt. 3/3

AI is a living product, not a one-time feature launch.

Every AI interaction consumes resources, and costs can grow quickly as adoption scales. Some organizations have exhausted their annual AI budgets within a single quarter when usage outpaced expectations. Ongoing monitoring is essential. Dashboards tracking token usage, average costs, and total spending help organizations understand usage patterns and establish appropriate guardrails before costs become unmanageable. Unlike traditional software features that may remain unchanged for years, AI-powered systems require continuous attention as models are updated and new capabilities emerge.

The organizations seeing the strongest results are those that treat AI as an evolving capability, not a one-time implementation, starting with a clear business problem and refining their approach as the technology and their understanding of it matures.

The question is no longer whether AI can do the task. The question is whether it can do it reliably, consistently, and at scale for every user who depends on it.

AI Is Not Just Plug-and-Play, pt. 2/3

What works for 10 users can wreck your product at 10,000.

Scaling AI isn't like scaling a traditional application. AI interactions are resource-hungry by default, with more processing power, longer response times, and heavier infrastructure requirements. A feature that performs flawlessly in testing can fall apart the moment real user volume hits. Speed matters too: users expect near-instant responses, and AI doesn't always deliver that out of the box. Background processing and caching are standard tools for smoothing things out.

The question is no longer whether AI can do the task. The question is whether it can do it reliably, consistently, and at scale for every user who depends on it.
