We'd start by figuring out who has admin access.

We've seen quite a few cases where:

- Former employees still have access
- Everyone uses the same admin credentials
- Vendors have unnecessary access
- Employees have more permissions than their job requires

Most businesses don't realize these can turn into real issues until something goes wrong.

One of our first goals when taking over a new client's IT is to understand who has access, why they have access, and if they still need it.

At GMITS, responsive, proactive IT is about regularly reviewing our client's environment, identifying potential risks, and addressing them before they become an issue.

What's a piece of bad IT advice we hear all the time?

β€œWe have antivirus, so we're protected.”

Not quite.

Antivirus is one layer of security. It doesn't automatically protect you from:

- A compromised Microsoft 365 account
- A stolen password
- A convincing phishing email
- An employee approving a malicious MFA request
- An attacker using a legitimate account
- Data being encrypted by ransomware

Security isn't one piece of software you install and forget about.

It's layers of protection, monitoring, access controls, backups, user awareness, and a plan for when something goes wrong.

A business can feel secure while still having some pretty significant gaps.

Your team shouldn’t have to become IT experts just to get their work done.

When something breaks, access disappears, or a system starts acting up, you need someone you can trust to fix the problem.

That’s what we do.

Less downtime. Fewer IT headaches. More time for you to focus on what matters.

Technology should make work easier, not harder. If your business is struggling with IT, let's talk.

AI is becoming a normal part of the workplace. But have you trained your employees to use it safely?

Employees can unintentionally expose confidential information, create compliance issues, or share sensitive data with AI tools without realizing the risk.

AI training shouldn't just be about productivity.

It should also cover:
- What data can be shared
- Which AI tools are approved
- What needs human review

AI can be a great tool at work, but it's up to you to ensure your employees know how to use it responsibly.

How long should you keep your business computers?

Many business owners assume they'll know when it's time to replace a computer, but waiting too long can lead to unexpected downtime, lost productivity, and costly emergency replacements.

In our latest blog, we explain why the five-year mark is a smart planning benchmark and how to decide which computers should be replaced first.

Remote work has become the norm for many businesses, but your security practices should evolve with it.

Employees are logging in from home offices, hotels, airports, and coffee shops. That kind of flexibility is great for productivity, but it also creates more opportunities for cyber threats if the right protections aren't in place.

A few basics can make a big difference:
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
- Company-managed devices
- Regular software updates
- Secure VPN or cloud access when appropriate

Remote work doesn't have to come at the expense of security. A little planning goes a very long way toward keeping your team productive and your business protected.

A phone call can be just as dangerous as a phishing email.

Scammers are getting better at impersonating people you trust: your brank, vendors, IT providers, or other business partners. They create urgency, claim there is a problem, and pressure you to provide information to take action immediately.

The best response? Slow it down.

If someone is asking for account details or other sensitive information, end the call and contact the company directly using a trusted number before providing any information.

A few minutes of verification can prevent a very expensive mistake.
