The computer word of the day is RAM. So what is RAM?

When buying a computer, you see the word RAM. You might also see the word MEMORY.

RAM (MEMORY) is where computer programs do work.

RAM is where all the detailed instructions are placed before they can do work. Part of that work is using information, such as customer name, address, and orders. This information is also placed into RAM. You can think of RAM as little rooms, where every room has a computer address. Paul Bunyan's name would be a bunch of 0s and 1s, but you can visualize it like this:

So why is more RAM better than less RAM?

RAM is very fast, but RAM in a computer has a limit. If a program needs more RAM to do work than the computer has, then STORAGE areas like hard drives are used as "pretend RAM" and program speed begins to crawl. It is like passing the baton to a Turtle in a relay race. The program can continue to work but must constantly wait for the Turtle.

When buying a computer, there is a minimum amount of RAM needed for the computer to run Windows, macOS, Linux, or Unix systems. You do not need to purchase the maximum amount of RAM that a computer can hold if you are not running big programs.

The computer word of the day is DATABASE. What is a DATABASE?

A DATABASE is information that belongs together.

In a computer, there are simple databases and very complex databases.

Here is a simple example:

Your favorite pizza or sandwich shop for delivery has some computer information files that belong together:

Menu Items - Everything you could possibly order from the shop.
Customer - Your name, address, contact information, and customer number.
Order - Previous and current orders from you, including your customer number, what day it happened, and the money totals.
Order Detail - The food and drinks you ordered, how many, the price, and any special requests.

Behind the scenes, the data files link together using an identifier.

For example:

Customer
Customer Record - 1
Customer Code - PBUNYAN
Customer Name - Paul Bunyan

Order
Order Record - 100
Customer Record - 1
Order Number - 1001
Order Date - 01/01/2025

* This Order knows that it matches up with Customer Record 1.

Order Detail
Detail Record - 225
Order Record - 100
Item Description - Deluxe Extra Large Pizza
Item Quantity - 24

Detail Record - 226
Order Record - 100
Item Description - Spaghetti
Item Quantity - 12

* Both of these items know that they match up with Order Record 100.

The computer word of the day is HERTZ. So what is HERTZ? You may have seen the word GigaHertz when purchasing a computer.

If you can tap your foot 3 times within a single second, then you are tapping at a speed of 3 Hertz.

Computers are much faster than that. Giga is a shortcut word for one Billion. So if a computer is doing something at 1 GigaHertz, it is doing that thing one billion times within a single second.

Most of todays consumer computers are at about 3 GigaHertz, which is the computer doing something 3 Billion times within a single second.

The definition today is for high level understanding for non-technical individuals, not nitty gritty engineering details.

Now here is something really extra cool.

There is an actual physical Quartz Crystal at the heart of this magic. The Crystal is lab-grown to a consistent state. When electrified, the Crystal itself does not oscillate at the GigaHertz speed, but it's reliable speed feeds other computer components that speed activity into the GigaHertz world.

🧠 Computer Word of the Day: BYTE

So what is a BYTE?

You may have seen the words MegaByte and GigaByte.

When the computer is talking to itself the letter 'A' looks like this: 01000001

When you touch the keyboard for a capital 'A', the keyboard sends 01000001 to the inside of the computer.

If you touch the lowercase 'a' the keyboad sends 01100001

So look at these side by side 01000001 01100001

They are not the same.

The number of 1's and 0's is 8. This is a BYTE.

Here is how the computer counts from 1 to 5 in BYTEs.

1 → 00000001
2 → 00000010
3 → 00000011
4 → 00000100
5 → 00000101

One million of these is a MegaByte.
One billion of these is a GigaByte.
