🔐 Microsoft just released its biggest Patch Tuesday ever. Is your PC actually up to date?
Microsoft’s October security release addressed roughly 1,400 vulnerabilities across Windows and other Microsoft products.
That sounds alarming, but it does not mean your computer had 1,400 security holes waiting to be exploited.
The practical takeaway is much simpler:
✅ Open Settings → Windows Update
✅ Check for available updates
✅ Install them
✅ Restart your PC if Windows asks you to
It’s also worth checking that Windows isn’t repeatedly failing an update or waiting indefinitely for a restart.
Small businesses should make sure every office PC is actually current rather than assuming automatic updates have worked on all of them.
We explain what this record-breaking update really means—and what home users and businesses should do—in our latest article:

If Windows Update keeps failing or you aren’t sure whether your PC is properly updated, PC Pros can help.
When was the last time you actually opened Windows Update and checked?

🤖 That new AI tool may not be what it appears to be.
Scammers are increasingly borrowing trusted names like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and DeepSeek to make phishing messages, fake downloads, and malicious advertisements look legitimate.
One of the biggest risks is that the message or website may look completely believable.
You might see:
🔹 A warning that your AI account needs immediate attention
🔹 A supposed new AI desktop application or plugin
🔹 A sponsored ad offering an AI download
🔹 A fake payment or subscription notice
The safest habit is simple: go directly to the company's official website rather than trusting an unexpected email, advertisement, or download link.
We've put together a new article explaining how these scams work and what home users and small businesses can do to avoid them:

And if you've already clicked something suspicious or installed software you're unsure about, PC Pros can help you determine what happened and what to do next.

🔐 Windows Secure Boot certificates are changing—but does your PC actually need attention?
Microsoft is replacing older security certificates used during the Windows startup process. One important certificate reaches its expiration date on October 19, 2026.
That may sound alarming, but your PC is not expected to suddenly stop working when the certificate expires.
For most home users, Windows Update should handle the transition automatically. Some computers may also need firmware or BIOS updates from the manufacturer.
Small businesses should pay particular attention to older PCs, systems that have missed updates, BitLocker-enabled computers, and centrally managed Windows devices.
The important takeaway is simple: keep Windows and manufacturer firmware current, and don't disable Secure Boot just to avoid an update.
We explain what is changing, what still works, and what home users and small businesses should do in our latest article:

💻 Windows 11 26H2 is here—but should you install it right away?
Microsoft has begun rolling out the Windows 11 2026 Update (version 26H2) to eligible PCs.
For many Windows 11 users, this should be a relatively straightforward update. But there's an important reason we don't recommend forcing a major Windows update onto a computer just because a new version has been released.
Microsoft rolls these updates out gradually and can temporarily hold them back from computers with known hardware or software compatibility problems.
For home users, that generally means letting Windows Update offer the upgrade normally.
For businesses, especially those with multiple PCs or specialized software, testing before deploying the update everywhere can prevent one compatibility problem from becoming an office-wide headache.
We've put together a new article explaining what's new, known issues to be aware of, how to check your Windows version, and what home and business users should consider before upgrading.

Still using Windows 11 24H2? It’s time to check.

Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach the end of updates on October 13, 2026.

Your computer won’t suddenly stop working the next day, but once 24H2 reaches the end of servicing, it will no longer receive the normal security and quality updates Microsoft provides for supported Windows releases.

For most people, this does not mean buying a new computer. If your PC is eligible, moving to Windows 11 25H2 is generally the normal upgrade path.

Not sure which version you have? You can check in just a minute—and small businesses should check each PC rather than assuming they’re all on the same Windows version.

We explain what to look for and what to do next in this week’s PC Pros article:

Your Browser Needs Security Updates Too

Most of us know that Windows needs updates.

But what about the program you probably use more than almost anything else on your computer — your web browser?

Chrome and Microsoft Edge usually update automatically, but there’s a catch: sometimes the update isn’t fully applied until you close and reopen the browser.

So if you leave dozens of tabs open for days or weeks, that little “Relaunch to update” message may be more important than it looks.

Browser security updates can contain fixes for vulnerabilities that attackers are already trying to exploit.

The good news? Checking your browser only takes a minute.

Our latest PC Pros article explains why browser updates matter and how to check Chrome and Edge.

Don’t keep putting off that relaunch.

If Your Computers Went Down Today, Could Your Business Keep Working?

Most businesses depend on their computers every day — for customer information, accounting records, documents, email, scheduling and other critical information.

Backing up that data is important.
But having a backup isn't necessarily the same as being prepared to recover.

If a computer failed completely today:
Would you know exactly what was backed up?
How recent is the backup?
Could you actually restore it?
How long would it take?
And what would your business do in the meantime?

Computer failures aren't always caused by cyberattacks. Hardware can fail. Files can be accidentally deleted. Equipment can be damaged or stolen. Sometimes technology simply stops working.

The important question isn't just “Do I have a backup?”
It's “How quickly could I get back to work?”

That's the subject of this week's PC Pros article.
Don't just back it up. Make sure you can recover it.

Phishing isn't just happening through email anymore.

Attackers are increasingly using trusted workplace tools such as Microsoft Teams to impersonate IT support.

The message may sound perfectly reasonable:

"We're seeing a problem with your computer. Let us fix it."

Then comes the dangerous part — a request to click a link, install software, run a command, provide credentials, or allow remote access.

The most important thing you can do is simple:

Verify independently.

If someone unexpectedly claims to be your IT provider, contact your provider using the phone number or email address you already know — not the information supplied in the message.

Our latest PC Pros article explains how these attacks work and what warning signs to look for.

Think before you click. Verify before you act.

Phishing isn't just an email problem anymore.

Most of us have learned to be suspicious of strange emails. But attackers increasingly use other ways to get someone's attention—including Microsoft Teams messages and calls, fake Microsoft login screens, unexpected MFA notifications and requests for remote computer access.

One of the easiest rules to remember:

👉 If you didn't initiate the login, don't approve the authentication request.

And if someone unexpectedly contacts you claiming to be IT support and asks for remote access to your computer, verify who they are using contact information you already trust before allowing access.

I've put together a new PC Pros article explaining what small businesses should watch for and five simple habits that can help.
