So there you are, minding your own business, when suddenly you can't log into your email. Then your bank says your password changed. Oops. Now your boss can't get into the company portal, and she does not sound happy.

You didn't change a thing. So what happened?

You used one password on several sites. One of them got breached, probably one you forgot you even had. Your email and password landed on a list, and attackers ran that list against everything else automatically. They weren't targeting you. Yours just still worked. Boom. Not good.

The fix is simple. Get a password manager so every account has its own unique password. Then turn on multi-factor authentication for a second lock. A stolen password alone won't get them in.
