We just went back and updated one of our older blog posts, and honestly, it needed it. It was still talking about GandCrab, a ransomware strain that shut down in 2019, and citing a $3.86 million average breach cost that's years out of date.
Here's what's actually true in 2026: average ransom demands are now $1.16 million, up more than double from the year before. Attacks are up 126% just in the first quarter of this year. And "we have backups" stopped being enough protection years ago, because attackers now steal your data before encrypting it and threaten to leak it regardless of whether you restore from backup.
We rewrote the whole thing with current numbers and what actually protects a business now.
How does ransomware affect your business in 2026: downtime, ransom demands, legal exposure, and closure risk. What has changed, and how to prevent it now.
