โš–๏ธ KNOW YOUR TAX RIGHTS: FAIRNESS MATTERS!

Did you know the IRS recognizes your right to a fair and just tax system? Whether you're a taxpayer or a tax professional, understanding taxpayer rights can help you navigate tax matters with greater confidence.

The latest IRS Tax Tip, 2026-73, published October 7, highlights this important right under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

๐Ÿ’ฐ TAX TIPS FOR TAXPAYERS

โœ… Know your rights: The IRS should consider relevant facts and circumstances that affect your tax obligations and ability to pay.

โœ… Explore payment options: If you cannot pay your tax bill in full, you may qualify for an IRS payment plan or, in certain circumstances, an offer in compromise.

โœ… Speak up when necessary: You can challenge an IRS position and provide supporting documents when you disagree.

โœ… Seek help when needed: The Taxpayer Advocate Service may be able to assist if you're experiencing financial hardship or your tax issue hasn't been resolved through normal IRS channels.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ TAX TIPS FOR TAX PREPARERS

๐Ÿ“Œ Help clients understand their rights and responsibilities.

๐Ÿ“Œ Explain IRS notices and available options clearly.

๐Ÿ“Œ Maintain accurate records and supporting documentation.

โœ… FRIDAY TAX ANSWERS | October 9, 2026

๐Ÿงพ DID YOU KNOW? HERE ARE THE ANSWERS TO THURSDAYโ€™S TAX QUESTIONS!

Letโ€™s clear up five common tax questions that taxpayers often overlook. Save this post for future reference! ๐Ÿ“Œ

1๏ธโƒฃ How long should you keep your tax records?
๐Ÿ“‚ Generally, at least 3 years for records supporting a tax return, but some situations require longer. For example, certain unreported income can extend the IRS assessment period to 6 years. Keep property records until the applicable period expires for the year you dispose of the property. Employment tax records generally must be kept for at least 4 years.

2๏ธโƒฃ Is an IRS CP2000 notice the same as a tax bill?
๐Ÿ“ฌ No. A CP2000 notice proposes changes because information reported by employers, banks, or other third parties doesnโ€™t match your return. Review it carefully and respond by the deadlineโ€”even if you disagree. Ignoring it can lead to further notices and a bill.

3๏ธโƒฃ Is bank interest taxable if you donโ€™t receive Form 1099-INT?
๐Ÿฆ Generally, yes. You must report taxable interest even if you donโ€™t receive a Form 1099-INT. Donโ€™t overlook small amounts when preparing your return.

4๏ธโƒฃ What is backup withholding?
๐Ÿ’ฐ Itโ€™s federal income tax withheld from certain payments when required by the IRS. The current rate is generally 24%. It may apply if you donโ€™t provide a correct taxpayer identification number or if you have certain underreported interest or dividend income.

5๏ธโƒฃ What if you canโ€™t pay your full tax bill by the deadline?
โฐ File your return on time anyway. Not being able to pay doesnโ€™t remove your filing obligation. Pay what you can and explore IRS payment options. Interest and applicable penalties may continue until the balance is paid, so acting early matters.

๐Ÿ“Œ TAX TAKEAWAY: Keep your records, read IRS notices, report all taxable income, and donโ€™t ignore a tax bill just because you canโ€™t pay it in full.

โ“ THURSDAY TAX QUESTIONS | October 8, 2026

๐Ÿ’ก 5 TAX QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD KNOW THE ANSWERS TO!

Tax rules can be confusing, and overlooking a small detail can lead to unexpected notices, penalties, or missed opportunities. Letโ€™s test your tax knowledge! ๐Ÿงพ

1๏ธโƒฃ How long should you keep your tax records?
๐Ÿ“‚ Is keeping your documents for three years always enough?

2๏ธโƒฃ Is an IRS CP2000 notice the same as a tax bill?
๐Ÿ“ฌ What should you do if the IRS says your reported income doesnโ€™t match its records?

3๏ธโƒฃ Is interest earned from a bank account taxable even if you donโ€™t receive Form 1099-INT?
๐Ÿฆ Does a small amount of interest still matter?

4๏ธโƒฃ What is backup withholding, and why might it apply to a payment you receive?
๐Ÿ’ฐ Could an incorrect or missing taxpayer identification number affect your payment?

5๏ธโƒฃ If you canโ€™t pay your full tax bill by the deadline, should you still file your tax return?
โฐ Whatโ€™s the difference between filing on time and paying on time?

๐Ÿ“Œ YOUR TURN: Comment with your answers โ€” 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 โ€” and tell us which question you want explained first!

๐Ÿ”น ๐Ÿ” Cybersecurity Remains a Year-Round Priority

๐Ÿ” TAX SECURITY IS A YEAR-ROUND RESPONSIBILITY!

The IRS says the Security Summitโ€™s โ€œProtect Your Clients; Protect Yourselfโ€ guidance isn't just for tax season โ€” these security practices matter all year long.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ FOR TAX PREPARERS:
Watch for phishing, IRS impersonation, fake โ€œnew clientโ€ requests and attempts to steal sensitive information. Review your security practices, train your team and protect client data.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ผ FOR TAXPAYERS:
Protect your tax information by using:
โœ… Strong, unique passwords
โœ… Multifactor authentication
โœ… Updated devices and software
โœ… Secure storage and backups
โœ… Caution with unexpected emails, texts and calls

The IRS does not initiate contact through social media to request personal or financial information. Be cautious with unexpected messages claiming to be from the IRS.

Don't wait for tax season to protect your tax information. Make cybersecurity part of your year-round tax routine. ๐Ÿ”

๐Ÿ“š FRIDAY TAX ANSWERS | October 2, 2026

โœ… 5 BASIC TAX QUESTIONS โ€” IRS ANSWERS!

Yesterday we asked 5 often-ignored tax questions. Here are the answers! ๐Ÿ‘‡

1๏ธโƒฃ If I mail my return on the deadline, is it filed on time?
โœ… Generally, yes. Under the timely-mailing rule, a properly addressed and sufficiently posted return generally can be treated as filed on the date it was postmarked, if mailed on time using the USPS or an IRS-designated private delivery service. ๐Ÿ“ฌ

2๏ธโƒฃ What is an IRS IP PIN?
๐Ÿ” An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number that helps prevent someone from using your Social Security number or ITIN to file a fraudulent federal tax return. Eligible taxpayers can enroll through their IRS Online Account.

3๏ธโƒฃ What if I move after filing?
๐Ÿ  You should notify the IRS of your new address. You can use Form 8822, provide your new address on a tax return, or use other IRS-approved methods. USPS forwarding does not replace notifying the IRS.

4๏ธโƒฃ Do I always need to amend a tax return after finding a mistake?
โŒ Not always. An amended return may be needed when there is a change in filing status, income, deductions, credits, dependents or tax liability. But you generally don't need to amend simply because the IRS corrected an error or requests additional information. Form 1040-X is used to amend an individual return.

5๏ธโƒฃ Is a tax transcript the same as a copy of my return?
โŒ No. A transcript summarizes tax information from IRS records; it is not a photocopy of your actual return. If you need an actual copy of the return you filed, the IRS says you generally use Form 4506.

๐Ÿ“Œ FRIDAY TAX TAKEAWAY:
Knowing the basics โ€” when a return is considered filed, protecting your identity, updating your address, correcting mistakes and understanding tax records โ€” can help you avoid unnecessary tax headaches.

๐Ÿ’ก When in doubt, check the IRS rules before making a tax decision.

๐Ÿ  Do you need to notify the IRS about your new address?
