The magnolia trees are starting to explode and I couldn't be more thrilled about it! They always seem to emerge right at the dreariest point of late winter to assure us that spring is just around the corner 🌸

I painted a whole series of magnolia and moth paintings last year as a way to explore hope and our impact on future generations. Here are some of the things I thought about as I painted:

Though magnolia blooms last only days to weeks, the trees can live for centuries, providing food, oxygen, and medicine to sustain life. Similarly, many moths emerge from the cocoon with no ability to eat and live just a few days—existing solely to reproduce and ensure the survival of what comes next. Both creatures speak of impermanence and cyclic beauty, of purpose and creation.

Together, these forms become meditations on the generative nature of hope and healing. When we fix our gaze on what we’re nurturing, we begin to shape a more harmonious present and a more cohesive future for those we’ll only meet through our reverberating actions. Rather than a passive longing, hope emerges through active creation, protection of beauty, and courage to seek new paths forward.

I painted this oleander hawk moth for on top of gold and silver leaf this winter for our original art exchange and was thrilled to experience some alchemical magic as I painted. I often try to decipher a painting's symbolic message after it's finished, or bits and pieces emerge while it's happening, but it rarely comes so clearly articulated as this one.

As I was halfway through, I was listening to an amazing book on alchemy by and she started talking about the alchemical marriage of the sun (gold/masculine) and moon (silver/feminine) and how the rays of the sun (Danny's Leo planet) and Jupiter (my Sagittarius planet) meet in Venus to create emerald green, which is a symbol of love and the heart chakra.

The merging of opposites create integration and wholeness, which is essential to the inner and outer work of transformation. Ancient texts often depict this concept as a marriage, which is a continuous refining process. I'm so thankful to do life and art with Danny and am so thankful to all of you who support our work!

Here's a closer look at 'Tenderness,' a sweetbay silkmoth against a backdrop of magnolia flowers that remind me of bubbles ☺️

I wrote an essay once about the magic of soap bubbles and how excited I get when doing the dishes and a bubble floats up into the air the way they do in cartoons. I'll have to share it again sometime soon...

Until then, stop by gallery to see this beauty in person!

When I was young, I was actively opposed to pink. Unfortunately, I saw it as an ooey gooey symbol of girly weakness and vulnerability. I idolized my older brother and didn’t want to associate myself with all the feminine pink things I thought were uncool.

As I became an adult capable of more nuanced thinking and feeling, I came to embrace pink as a celebration of softness, emotion, hospitality, feminine energy, comfort, and love.

Pink is also just really aesthetically pleasing with every other color, so it finds its way into much of my work these days despite our hostile beginnings 🩷

In honor of the month of love, romantic and otherwise, here’s a look at some available pink paintings!

The cocoon email I sent out this morning was an ode to pink and included this poem 'Seedling' as the poem of the day:

Hello young seedling
with roots not quite sure what they're drinking
Girl and boy child
jump, skip, playing all day, tame and wild
your roots soaking up
safety and chaos like tea from a cup
and shimmering sense
of self not quite solid, no border nor fence
and who shall you trust?
The tea sets are covered in summer and dust
Maybe you can live
forever if you can but learn how to give
maybe the white dress
makes magic and hides all the mess
you didn't think
the soil you needed to bloom into pink
was anything good,
but weak and below- you misunderstood
crying and dancing
soft in the rain, is something worth chancing
despite all the pain

I've always had fond feelings for oak trees, from the tangled trunks to the shapely leaves and acorns. I grew up in Modesto, which is in the central valley of California and we had giant oak trees in our backyard that I still get to visit at my parents' house. 🌳

Here's a look at a special commission from last year of a brown tiger moth and oak leaves for a collector who had this stunning moth visit her during a difficult transitional phase. I love hearing about moth encounters, they always seem to show up at just the right time to teach us about change ✨

When's the last time you encountered a moth?
