Nathan Yoder

Nathan Yoder Yondr Studio is the illustration and design studio of Nathan Yoder, located in Edmonds, WA.

I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised in a small rural town just northeast of there. In the 8th grade, an invitation to draw t-shirt designs for a local screenprinter was my introduction into the world of design. Following that thread, in 2010, I earned a degree in graphic design from Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology afterwhich I worked for a small branding agency in Tulsa for

a time. From there I was hired on as an artist at a startup clothing brand in Southern California before relocating to Portland, Oregon, in July of 2014. There I opened up shop as Yondr Studio and met my wife before finally settling in the Seattle area. I began Yondr Studio with the aim of creating a space where craftsmanship and design can coincide. For me, this has meant setting aside digital tools of convenience, where at all possible, in exchange for those traditional tools and mediums who’s techniques and methods are hard won through years of discipline and practice. It’s this sort of perseverance and care for one’s craft that, I believe, builds character both in the artist and their work; character that is then passed on to the client in the form of a rich and meaningful product. It’s this sort of product that I strive to provide for each and every one of my clients.

This is an illustrated logo design that I recently developed in collaboration with clothing brand, Chapel Pond Farm. The concept was built around the founder’s father who is a lawyer from 9 to 5 and a cattle farmer from 5 to 9.

Work for Toad Hollow Wines, 2025.

This is a look at one of the original pen drawings from last year's collaboration with
Johnny Cárdenas (CD) for Toad Hollow Wines. The idea was to develop a new outfit to be worn by the brand mascot on each of the various wines that would be expressive of each of the respective wines offered by Toad Hollow.

This was such a fun project. Anytime storytelling and animals come together, it's going to be a good time.

Lately I’ve been using sticky notes for quick thumbnail sketches and doodles. Here’s one from a little while back.

An aside—this pen is a Kaweco Liliput fountain pen that my wife got me a few Christmases back. While mowing it once dropped out of my pocked and I hit it with the reel mower. Somehow, 1. I saw it in the grass and, 2. it survived. Now it has battle scars.

__________

Some backstory on this piece:

THE ENGRAVING: Several years back I started a wood engraving of the late, great, C. S. Lewis. As I reached the midway point the face in the sketch that I had transferred to the block, began rubbing off — yes, I was foolishly saving the most difficult part of the engraving for last. So, naturally, rather than dealing with the issue head on, I drug my feet as I contemplated whether to work with what was left of the sketch or to attempt to re-transfer his face to the block. Long story short, after a decent amount of finagling, I successfully re-transferred his face to the block and was able to finish the engraving just a week or two later.

THE BLOCK was harvested and prepared for engraving from a downed holly tree that my wife's aunt was having removed. It, and a collection of other blocks, were then left to dry for around a year before I began work on the engraving. Preparing my own blocks for engraving has become a whole other story in and of itself.

THE ARTWORK for the engraving was a pencil drawing of C. S. Lewis that I completed back in 2022. He being one of my favorite authors and thinkers, it was a bit of a daunting project to try and capture his likeness in pencil, let alone as a line engraving. As always, there are plenty of things that I would adjust if I did it again but I was happy with the result nonetheless.

Ligonier Ministries recently tasked Yondr Studio with developing the cover design and illustration for their republication of the time honored Westminster Shorter Catechism.

It was a real honor to work with Ligonier Ministries on this. Thank you once again to Anthony Diehl and Ligonier Creative for the opportunity and for all of the great direction along the way.
