TypeWell

TypeWell TypeWell is a system for transcribing speech to text, to provide communication access and notes for students who need additional support.

TypeWell is an effective learning tool for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those with visual, physical, or learning difficulties. We teach a hearing transcriber to use a notebook computer with the TypeWell abbreviation software to transcribe meaning-for-meaning what is said in lectures and discussions. (Read more about the difference between meaning-for-meaning and verbatim here

The person reading the transcript (i.e., the consumer) can read in real-time from a second computer or mobile device. The consumer can also type questions and comments to the transcriber to be voiced, and he or she can take notes right in the TypeWell program on the second computer. In addition to communication access during classes or meetings, TypeWell transcribers usually provide a copy of the edited transcripts for review or after-class study.
