There’s an old saying that goes, “A day is long, but a year is short.”

The days take forever, but the years just fly by.

While I do believe there is truth in that statement, I also believe the inverse is true: A day is short, but a year is long.

One year ago, I could barely afford to pay Aaron (my first employee) $18/hr for 24 hours a week. There were a couple weeks where I couldn’t afford for him to come to work at all.

Now I have four full-time employees that are being paid more than I’ve ever been paid in my life (including currently - I am intentionally the lowest paid person in the company), and we are still growing.

The amount of growth that has happened in a year is insane. One year ago, I would’ve never guessed that I’d have two employees, let alone four.

Back in October, Aaron asked me, “How long do you think it’ll be before we start getting gaylords worth of stuff?”

I replied, “Probably at least another year before we get one or two gaylords full.”

Lol.

Here’s to Year 2 🥂

As promised, here is the photo of my seven framed Pentium Pros from our pickup last week.

Since the day I started TechRec, I’ve been on the hunt for these elusive CPUs. Theoretically I could’ve bought one for $75 on eBay, but finding my own is much more special (let alone seven at once!!).

When these were originally brand new in the 90s, they cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 — in 90s money! That’s roughly $2,000 to $4,000 in today’s money.

Nowadays they’re just collector’s items, but still super cool nonetheless. I’m proud to hang them in my office.

Maybe they’ll be worth thousands again someday.

Probably not, but it’s cool to own a piece of tech history that shows how far we’ve come at TechRec.

All I can say is… “Wow.”

This job was only supposed to be one day, but when we got to the job site, there was literally 4x as much e-waste as we originally planned. I was actually impressed with how much was there.

It took us two full days (Monday and Thursday) to clean everything up. We filled up 73 pallets of e-waste, nearly half of that being CRTs.

We spent two 17-hour days cleaning up everything. Definitely the biggest job in TechRec history, by far.

On the bright side, I found SIX Pentium Pros, AKA one of the rarer vintage CPUs around.

I am going to frame them.

I keep forgetting to make new posts because I’m afraid of posting redundant content.

The thing is, that’s literally part of running a business. It gets redundant sometimes.

On the bright side, 12 months ago I was working out of the back of a U-Haul with my girlfriend in the 120-degree Arizona heat.

Now I have four employees and a fifth one on the way.

I guess that’s a good sign that we’re growing.

Anyway — here’s some iPad Minis that we just picked up yesterday.

Don’t mind me, I’m just saving 1000lbs of obsolete computers and from the dumpster.

If you have electronics that don’t work anymore (or you simply don’t use them), give us a call and we’ll come recycle them.

I’m just going to keep posting on Facebook and hope it reaches new customers 😆

This morning, a customer called me at 7 AM. We don’t normally open until 9, but he left a voicemail saying that he had a lot of e-waste to recycle.

I immediately called him back and told him we could help him out today.

This is load #2 of 4. Thousands of pounds of electronics being recycled instead of thrown away.

If you need electronics recycling for your home or business in Arizona, give me a call at (309) 883-5137. I’ll make sure you’re served ASAP.

Being a small business owner is hard, but we’re gonna make it.

Today I got a call from a business customer and they said, “We’re on the next street over. Can you come take a look at what we have?”

“I’ll be there in 5 minutes,” I replied.

20 minutes later, we had a truck full of e-waste and a happy customer.

One day at a time.

I pulled this big Bertha out of a piece of machinery today and had to post it because it weighs more than a child.

We just picked up 21 pallets of e-waste and I couldn’t be happier.

With an estimated 500lbs of e-waste per pallet, that’s over 10,000lbs saved from landfills.

I love my job.

We’ve officially started our process to become R2 certified 🎉

I’m fortunate to have met such high-quality people in this journey, and somehow it’s only the beginning.

When I started TechRec back in August, I could barely afford to pay Aaron for 18 hours a week, and I cried alone in this warehouse several times.

I didn’t know how to run a business, and I most certainly didn’t know what ITAD was.

But yesterday we submitted our application to start the R2 certification process.

We also have pallet racks that fit this time. I measured twice before I bought them 😆

We’re gonna make it.

The good news is, we’re doing enough volume to justify pallet racks.

The bad news is, they don’t fit.

I bought these pallet racks from a liquidation sale this week. It was 8 hours of sweaty, dirty labor. We had to disassemble the racks, throw them in the U-Haul, and bring them back.

…but when we brought them back, we realized two major issues:

1. They’re not a full 8ft (96 inches) wide. They’re actually 94 inches wide, so we physically cannot stack our typical 40x48 pallets next to each other. There just isn’t space.

2. Even if the racks were 9ft wide or more, I forgot to account that the forklift has to fit in there too. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t 😞

I always say, “You win some, you learn some,” but man I’m tired of learning.

One day at a time. We’re gonna make it.
