Perception starts before you have even spoken a word. That’s just the honest truth.
Take me for example.
If you’ve met me in person, you’ve already decided something about me when you first see me. It’s not judgement, it’s just human nature. I bring a presence with me. Everyone does.
Mine involves a hat and a floral blazer. It’s not a coincidence. It’s a wayfinder and it’s setting the expectations when we connect. You know what you’re getting.
In fact, when I went to a recent event without a hat, I got some sh*t for it.
And, at another event, a woman came up to me in a hat and told me I was her inspiration for wearing it. How fun is that?
When it comes to business, this shows up as consistency, an expectation you intentionally set, and when you waiver that reflects the trust and credibility you’re building. If there is no trust, people won't invest their time in you.
If they don’t invest their time in you, can you really expect them to invest their money in you?
Figure out what expectations you want to set when you enter a room. Then set them. With your energy, presence and vibe. Then be consistent.
Perception is not about being fake. It’s about being intentional about how your brand experience aligns with who you are and what you represent.
I’m not saying you should wear a hat and floral blazer to all your events.
But I am saying that if you see me at an event in sweatpants you should assume there is something wrong and take appropriate action. Thanks in advance.
