RETAIL CYBER SECURITY THREATS, COUNTERMEASURES, AND SOLUTIONS

Verizon, in their report analysis on major Data Breach Investigations of 2016, summarized the menace of cyber threats as:

“No locale, no industry or organization is bulletproof when it comes to the compromise of data.”

This is no exaggeration, and the issue has become a crucial challenge for organizations across the globe. No matter the industry, or size of the enterprise, the figures have escalated to an alarmingly high pitch.

Consider the WannaCry ransomware attack and the recent Google phishing attack as cautionary tales. In the case of the Google phishing attack, messages were sent by an attacker using OAuth (Open Authorization) credentials attached to legitimate accounts, the messages appeared to be from friends or business associates including their photos. Checking the received headers and other technical steps used to verify the provenance of these messages, showed that they were legitimately sent through Gmail... because they were. When opened, the recipient gave the attacker permission to access everything – including the recipient's contacts that were used to send infected emails out to contacts who were now also subject to this phishing attack. In the wake of the industry’s giant leap to omni-channel platforms, cyber security and data protection have become a larger issue for the home furnishings retailers. The statistics gathered from recent reported cases point to a future dark trend in cyber crime.

In 2014 major retail data breaches involved incidents of breaking into leading retailers’ data mines, revealing the confidential information of over 495 million customers. Similarly, a total of 523 cyber assault incidents were reported in the retail industry in 2015, of which, 164 incidents caused huge data losses to targeted retail organizations.

Likewise, according to the BDO Retail Risk Factor Report published in 2016, cyber threats and data breaches were reported as one of the core challenges facing the industry. The report also said that the frequency of incidents has exponentially increased, with each retailer studied facing at least eight assaults per year, of varying types and intensities. 74% of those attacks were critical, causing sizable damage.

Several basic types of cyber threats cause considerable damage to furniture retailers every year. Some of the major types of data breaching attacks are described below:

WHY YOU NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR IN-STORE WI-FI FOR FURNITURE RETAILING IN 2017

Customers expect a seamless experience when shopping in your store. These days that means that offering a Wi-Fi connection is a necessity. Indeed, Wi-Fi is one of the easiest services retailers can offer to ensure a positive shopping experience for their customers.

According to research conducted by JWire, about 80 percent of customers feel that an in-store Wi-Fi connection would influence their purchase decisions. In other words, customers would be more willing to purchase from a store that provides a Wi-Fi connection.

THE TOP 5 REASONS WHY RETAILERS DON'T INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS TO GROW THEIR BUSINESS

And how to overcome those objections.

I have been working in the retail industry for over two decades developing technological solutions for retailers to help them more efficiently manage their business, and make more money doing it. My journey has lead me to develop inventory software solutions, creating databases, Home Furnishing Software, POS Furniture Software, and reengineering of software with extended features and support.

What I find interesting is that the same excuses for not integrating technology into retail store systems and processes exist today as they did 20 years ago. The top 5 reasons being;

FURNITURE TODAY MAGAZINE-iConnect preps rollout of new traffic counter software

Clint Engel, September 20, 2016

STERLING, Va. — Retail technology firm iConnect is rolling out a new traffic counting system that uses a handful of inexpensive digital cameras not only to count store traffic, but also to report on where shoppers linger and whether or not they are repeat visitors.

The new Visilytics is slated to roll out around Thanksgiving time and is meant to replace a system that was launched just a few years ago by Amitesh Sinha, owner and chief information officer of the Sterling, Va.-based iConnect. That earlier system — called SIA for Shopper Intelligence Analytics — used WiFi routers as sensors. They were placed strategically in the store, to count and follow any consumer who walked in the door with any brand of smartphone. SIA did a good job of connecting to the shoppers, calculating their numbers, tracking their time spent in various areas of the store and reporting all this to the retailer, for a low monthly subscription fee, Sinha said.

MACY'S ADDS IN-STORE FUNCTIONALITY TO APP TO IMPROVE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE...

AND YOUR STORE CAN HAVE THIS TECHNOLOGY NOW

I read this article today on Business Insider: Macy's adds in-store functionality to app.

The article goes on to state that Macy’s is adding new functionality to their in-store APP, specifically:

The new tools are geared specifically toward in-store shoppers. The app updates automatically with store inventory, product reviews, and a price comparison calculator. These features appear by default on the app’s home screen when a shopper walks into the store.

The app leverages beacon technology. Macy’s uses beacons in its stores to drive location-based activity in its app. Beacons are small, wireless devices that transmit Bluetooth signals, which the app can receive. Those signals trigger an action, such as updating store inventory or offering a discount.

"If your business intelligence dashboard does not fit on one page, you have a report, not a dashboard!!”

Dashboards have made a place for themselves in the current age and market. However, their popularity does not help one bit when their potential is utilized and implemented in the wrong way. The only reason behind employing a dashboard is to get information across. However, the only information that is being shared must be important and it must be communicated in a way that is obvious and accurate. You decrease the efficacy of a dashboard by saying a lot or too little. Some dashboards are guilty of being too complicated to comprehend at a single glance — one of the tenets of dashboard uses.

Most of the blame in misusing dashboards falls on their design rather than dashboards themselves. Since they are “seen”, most of the failure surrounds the visual designing of a dashboard. As you search the internet, you will come across hundreds, if not more examples of dashboards.

Behind dashboards that display attractive gauges and the bells and whistles to go with them is hidden one important fact: these dashboards do not “say” anything!

That is after all, their purpose. It is important to note that this does not stop people from buying and selling such dashboards. This is because flashy dashboards are considered good ones.

THE FUTURE OF ANALYTICS FOR RETAIL STORES TO HELP YOU DO MORE BUSINESS COST EFFECTIVELY. HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN SAVE YOU TIME & MAKE YOU MONEY NOW.

Today, brick and mortar retailers are experiencing immense pressure. This isn’t only due to the sharp increase in online sales, but also because of the increase in consumers who prefer to purchase through their mobile devices while actually present in physical stores. These reasons along with the sharp rise in competition by online-only businesses such as Amazon have really impacted retail sales.

According to Ofcom, an average adult spends around 20 hours online every week while another research by ING has revealed that 84% of shoppers buy through mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets instead of visiting stores since the past 12 months.

This is the time when retailers should start taking the shopping experience they offer to a whole new level. Retail analytics is certainly not a new concept, it’s a notion that many retailers have actually been refining over the past few years in order to enhance their business.
