Stina Inc.

Stina Inc. Delivering unbiased guidance to navigate the role plastics play in the movement toward circularity. Stina Inc. and Canada for more than 10 years.

is a mission-based company striving to harmonize human behavior with the natural world. Often serving as liaison between industry, government and NGOs, the company helps organizations address and work through barriers to more sustainable management of resources. The company’s information management system, relationships, and understanding of the plastics recycling landscape have made it the truste

d organization to deliver the annual plastic recycling reports for the U.S. The team is committed to providing unbiased guidance in navigating the role plastics play in the movement towards circular supply chains, valuing carbon, and reducing GHG emissions. The Stina team gathers and assesses critical data, facilitates engagement and collaboration, and raises awareness of key issues for better decision-making. The company has developed resources for businesses and consumers to take actionable steps to transition to circularity such as PlasticsMarkets.org, Buy Recycled Plastics Directory, The Information Exchange, CircularityInAction.com, as well as undertaken projects to create an optimized recovery ecosystem – the latest resulted in a “Roadmap to Plastic Recyclability.”

Stina’s leaders have been invited to testify before the U.S Congressional Hearing on Challenges Facing Recycling and recognized by WWF for Women Leading the Plastic Revolution. They’ve participated in various panels including the Nat Geo Circular Economy Forum and presented at the World Circular Economy and to the OPEC Secretariat during the 3rd Workshop on Energy & Information Technology. Join us in welcoming Oksana Makarova to the Stina team! Oksana is a PhD candidate in Engineering Sciences at Harvard University, conducting her doctoral research in industrial ecology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As a research intern for Stina, Oksana brings expertise in plastic film and flexible packaging recycling, including work on quantifying post-consumer flexible plastic packaging waste flows and assessing their true recyclability—an important area for understanding and improving low recycling rates for plastic films. Her work aligns with Stina’s mission to turn complex recycling challenges into actionable insights that help industry, policymakers, and communities make better decisions for a more sustainable future.

Oksana is currently mapping the U.S. flexible plastic packaging (FPP) value chain to identify cost-effective and low-carbon pathways for recycling, while also examining renewable energy manufacturing processes to quantify and reduce embodied emissions. Her work on FPP leverages life cycle assessment (LCA), material flow analysis (MFA), and cost modeling to inform both industry practices and policymaking.

Through her work, Oksana aims to create systemic change in how we produce, consume, and manage resources—ultimately contributing to a more resilient and sustainable future.

Welcome, Oksana! We’re glad to have you onboard.

Plastic squeeze tubes are in nearly every household, alongside similar sized bottles. To answer questions about their recyclability, Stina brought together a group of stakeholders in 2015 to foster collaboration and understand barriers to and solutions for achieving recyclability.

𝐁𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐒: By 2023, at least 75% of all HDPE tubes on the US market were designs compatible with the color HDPE (CHDPE) bottle recycling stream.

𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐔𝐌: As of 2025, it is estimated that approximately 95% of toothpaste tubes and 85% of all HDPE tubes are compatible designs. The vast majority of PP tubes are also compatible with the PP Rigid Stream.
