Why I Believe Prevention Is Better Than Crisis Response
After more than 25 years in technology, I've learned something that applies just as much to healthcare as it does to cybersecurity.
The best time to prepare is before you need to.
No one plans for a data breach.
No one expects an OCR audit.
No one wakes up thinking, "Today is the day something goes wrong."
But when problems do happen, they almost always reveal something that could have been addressed earlier.
A missing policy.
Outdated training.
An overlooked vendor agreement.
A risk that was never documented.
The good news is that prevention doesn't have to be overwhelming. It doesn't mean doing everything at once. It means taking thoughtful steps to strengthen your practice over time.
That's why I believe HIPAA compliance is really about preparation—not perfection.
When you know your risks, train your team, and keep your documentation organized, you're not just checking boxes.
You're protecting your patients, your practice, and your peace of mind.
If you're wondering whether your practice is as prepared as it could be, I'd be happy to help.
I offer a FREE 15-minute HIPAA Compliance QuickCheck for solo providers and small practices.
We'll talk about where you are today, identify any obvious gaps, and discuss practical next steps that make sense for your practice.
