Scot Briscoe Artwork

Scot Briscoe Artwork I am a creative, trying to find time to paint and draw within the crevices of any spare time.

This is me, in the raw, starting with imperfect and trying to find my own voice through artistic expression.

“Before the petal falls, it was luminous — and that was enough”
Oil, cold wax, gold leaf, and Japanese chiyogami paper collage on board. 8 × 8 inches.
A single magnolia blossom against a gold leaf ground — blush petals carrying chiyogami pattern within them, seigaiha scales visible through translucent layers of paint. Pattern becomes petal. Gold becomes light.
A quiet meditation on seasons, on the brief and perfect moment before turning. This is a painting about joy that knows what it costs, and opens anyway.

“She did not seek their company — and yet, they came”
Oil, cold wax, and Japanese chiyogami paper collage on panel. 12 × 14 inches.
A Cream Legbar hen, unhurried and entirely herself, set against a luminous gold ground alive with layered pattern. The chiyogami papers don’t merely surround her — they become her, seigaiha scales and medallion florals woven into feather and form. Four butterflies orbit her world, drawn to something she isn’t even offering.

“I find in her white stillness a celebration dressed in morning light”
This new piece was a commission based on an image seen in the recent show at the COCA Gary Manuel Salon show.
Oil, cold wax, and Japanese chiyogami paper collage on watercolor board. 10 × 15 inches.
White orchids against amber and burnt sienna — warm, luminous, alive with a joy that doesn’t need to raise its voice. Three blooms in conversation, each turned at a different angle, as if the celebration is still unfolding and hasn’t decided yet where to look.
Beneath and between them, fragments of chiyogami surface through the dark passages — tiny florals, geometric patterns, histories compressed into the background. Surface as meaning. The cold wax holds the light with a particular stillness, as if the painting is breathing slowly and inviting you to do the same.
A companion piece to “I sense a delicate white beauty intertwined in fragrant glee” — two orchids, one story told twice, from different distances.

…continuing to work on this larger canvas of a Japanese flowering crabapple (Malus floribunda). This gorgeous gnarled and scruffy tree is on the edge of our driveway. It’s a flowering fruit tree and brings us these vibrant magenta blossoms every spring. Luckily it doesn’t actually bear any fruit - just the deep plum and crimson petal
I am looking forward to celebrating Spring with them again this year.

“I sense a delicate white beauty intertwined with fragrant glee” has found its home.

Another piece from the COCA show at Gary Manuel has sold. Thank you to all the collectors and curators who make space for work by local artists.
The show ends soon. Sneak by and see this and all the work on the salon walls before I take it down.

Just finishing this work
“Your faithfulness is rewarded—turning toward morning, brightening the winter dark.”

A winter-blooming camellia painted as a meditation on resilience and quiet illumination. Oil and cold wax layered slowly, honoring the strength of this species that blooms faithful through the long season.

Title after Winter Light by Thomas James Martin

Continuing to explore this delicate, yet hardy flower in different sizes and color palettes.

“When the season is spare and the light is thin, purity softly blooms”
This 12x12 inch oil and cold wax piece reflects a moment of quiet persistence. The camellia japonica—one of winter’s most unexpected flowers—becomes a symbol of clarity and grace emerging from restraint. Against the muted atmosphere of the season, its pale bloom holds light gently, offering calm rather than spectacle.

“Wet with the soft rain kisses of the night, I am enfolded in your vermilion robe” has found its home.

This piece is part of the COCA show at Gary Manuel, and its sale feels like a quiet affirmation of what drew me to it in the first place—layered surfaces, textile memory, and a sense of being held by color rather than defined by form. Grateful for the collectors and curators who make space for work that lingers.

“The soft whisper of silk on tatami, time is mystery for your ivory petals” - has found its home.

There’s a moment after a piece leaves the studio when the space it occupied feels both empty and full—full of what it taught me, empty in a way that invites the next conversation to begin. I’m already deep into new work, carrying forward new ideas and themes for my florals - excited to keep exploring the unfolding of this form.

Grateful for collectors who make room for local and emerging artists.

“The day opens its wealth, and what blooms does not hesitate”
36x36 inches, oil and cold wax and paper collage on canvas
This piece reflects confidence as a natural state—growth that arrives fully formed, without apology. A meditation on prosperity as harmony, where color, pattern, and light unfold with calm assurance rather than force.
