Back in early 2025, I told my career strategy group something that felt a little ahead of its time: AI was about to move into EHR systems and departments across healthcare, and the professionals who paid attention early would be the ones who got to choose their next move instead of having it chosen for them.

💎 I told them exactly which courses I was taking (I've mastered 7/10 from this list).

At the time, I already had revenue cycle and revenue integrity expertise.

“I cannot keep doing this productivity-number thing forever.”

If you’re a medical coder and you’ve thought that while watching another dashboard measure your codes per hour, this is for you.

You may not need to leave healthcare.

And you may not need to throw away the coding experience you worked hard to build.

👉 You may need to reposition it.

One career lane worth researching: *Revenue Integrity.*

Think about what you already understand:

✓ Documentation
✓ Reimbursement
✓ Billing rules
✓ Charge accuracy
✓ Compliance
✓ Audits
✓ Claims

Those aren’t random coding skills.

They connect directly to how healthcare organizations protect accurate reimbursement and reduce revenue leakage.

⚠️ Here’s the catch:

Hiring managers cannot automatically translate your experience for you.

If your résumé says:

“Assigned ICD-10-CM and CPT codes”
“Reviewed medical records”
“Met daily productivity standards”

…it may communicate what you did without showing the broader business value you understand.

And that positioning matters when you’re targeting Revenue Integrity, Charge Capture, Payment Integrity, Audit, or Compliance roles.

💡 Your experience may be transferable.

But your résumé has to prove the bridge.

Required means required. Preferred is where you actually have a shot.

Most people apply to both the same way and then wonder why the responses stopped.

This is for the job seeker who is applying steadily — 20+ applications in — and getting almost nothing back.

Or equivalent experience — the line almost nobody reads carefully. It's often sitting right next to a requirement that scared you off, and it's the employer telling you they'll take the work over the paper.

Now here's the problem.
Nobody is reading 100 postings line by line to sort that out every week. So people default to applying to everything, or applying to nothing.

That's what a résumé alignment score is for.
You run your résumé against the posting, and you can see your match percentage and what's missing — before you spend 30 minutes on an application.

And sometimes it surfaces something you forgot you had.
Experience that's genuinely in your history but never made it onto the page. I've watched people stop mid-sentence at that.

Below 75%?
That's your signal to fix something first, not to hit submit and hope.

Test it against a posting you were about to apply for and see for yourself.

“I thought the interview went really well… so why didn’t I get the job?”

That question can send a job seeker into a spiral fast.

You start replaying everything:

❌ Maybe I talked too much.
❌ Maybe my example wasn’t strong enough.
❌ Maybe they didn’t like me.
❌ Maybe I completely misread the interview.

But there is another possibility job seekers often overlook:

You may have interviewed well and still not been the candidate they selected.

Because hiring decisions can also come down to:

• Another candidate having more direct experience
• An internal employee applying
• Someone giving a stronger, more specific example
• A referral or existing relationship
• The hiring manager changing priorities midway through the process
• Several strong candidates competing for one opening

So before you decide the rejection means you “interview badly,” ask a better question:

**Is this one rejection… or is this a pattern?**

One rejection is a data point.

A repeated pattern is something to investigate.

If you keep making it to interviews but not advancing, review:

✅ Are my examples specific enough?
✅ Am I clearly explaining my accomplishments and results?
✅ Am I connecting my experience to what the role actually requires?

That’s where the strategy comes in.

Rejection is information. It is not always a diagnosis.

Learn from what belongs to you.

Don’t take responsibility for the parts of the hiring process you could never control.

Before you enroll in anything, spend one evening doing this instead.

This is for the professional who has been quietly researching another degree or certification because it feels like the only way forward — and hasn't yet confirmed whether employers in their target role are actually asking for it.

There is no single standard across healthcare.

One health system wants a bachelor's, five years, and a credential.
Another wants the years and nothing else.

Same job title. Same work. Completely different gate.

So pull 15 to 20 postings for the role you want — more if you can — and track four columns:

🌸 Education listed
🌸 Certification listed
🌸 Technical skills and systems named
🌸 Required or preferred

Then count the frequency. That's the whole exercise. You're looking for a trend, not one scary posting.

Three things usually happen when people do this.

The credential they were about to pay for shows up as *preferred* far more often than required.

A system or skill they'd never noticed shows up in almost every posting — and that's the actual gap, not the degree.

Or they realize they've been qualified for something for two years and never applied.

Do this for the specific employers you want to work for and it gets sharper still. Regional systems, academic centers, and payers weight these differently.

Education is worth real money when it's the right education for the role you're actually pursuing. The job descriptions will tell you which one that is. For free. Before you sign anything.

"There are no entry-level jobs in healthcare."

I hear this constantly. And I understand why it feels true.

But here's the distinction that matters: not being able to find entry-level roles and those roles not existing are two completely different problems.

Most job boards weren't built with a category for you.

There's no separate space for someone with zero to one year of experience, no filter for roles where you can gain a certification after you're hired.

Everyone gets thrown into the same search results — the candidate with ten years of experience and the candidate applying to their first HIM role, competing for visibility in the exact same pool.

That's not a reflection of the job market.
That's a structural problem with where you're searching.

The roles exist.

It's figuring out where you actually belong.

I tell my one-on-one clients the same thing every time:

💰 Before you apply anywhere, know your market value — on a state and national level, in your actual specialty.

Not what you *think* you're worth.
Not what the last job paid.
What the market is actually paying right now for someone with your experience.

Once you know that number, everything else gets easier.

✅ You stop applying to titles that don't match your experience.
✅ You stop wasting time on roles that don't meet your salary target.
✅ You start focusing on opportunities that are a mutually beneficial fit — for you and the employer.

From there, build your Top 10 Target Employers. 🎯

Go to each of their career pages and set up automated job alerts.

It's 2026 — you shouldn't be manually checking a hospital's careers page every morning. 😩

Set the alerts, then go one step further:

📩 Organize your inbox so those notifications land at the top.

⭐ Mark them as important.

📂 Categorize them.

🚫 Make sure they never touch spam/junk.

That's the difference between seeing a posting on day one versus day ten, when 200 other people may have already applied.

⏰ None of this takes more than a few hours of focused time.

But it's the few hours most job seekers skip — and it's usually one of the reasons the search drags on much longer than it needs to.

I keep seeing a pattern with experienced professionals...especially those with 5+ years of experience.

🎯 They're qualified for higher-paying roles.

They're just targeting the wrong companies, wrong roles, and using a roadblock resume when applying.

One of my clients had: 13 years of experience, BS in Health Information Management, RHIA, and Operational + clinical exposure.

But she wasn't in a role that reflected any of it.

- She didn't buy a full resume rewrite.
- She didn't book a 1:1 strategy session.

➡️ She completed a resume audit and implemented the RACA Resume Method on her own.

Picture this: 1,000 people apply to the same job posting. They run their resume through ChatGPT with the same basic prompt — "tailor this to the job description."

The output starts to cluster out to all the prompts for that description.

Same phrasing.
Same bullet structure.
Same "spearheaded," same "streamlined," same "cross-functional collaboration" showing up over and over, because it's pulling from the same patterns.

👀 On the other side of that inbox is a hiring manager or recruiter reading resume after resume that sounds like it was written by the same person.

And it's not just a hunch...recruiters and hiring managers have started calling this out publicly, saying they can tell when a resume was run through the same tool with the same generic prompt.

That's the part AI can't fix on its own. It doesn't know what your target department is actually struggling with. It only knows what you tell it... and if what you tell it is just the job posting, you'll sound like everyone else who did the same thing.

AI is a collaborator.
It's not the strategist.

That part is still yours.
