Been doing a lot of drawings and studies over the last two weeks for a new short Absolute Martian Manhunter animation. Still early in the process, but it’s been exciting figuring out the look, movement, and pushing the character in animation. More to come soon.

Issues #7–10 of *Absolute Martian Manhunter* finally came in, and I’m officially all caught up. Now I just need to swing by this week and grab issue #11.

In the meantime, I’m doing some Martian studies. and are absolutely knocking it out of the park. They’ve created something truly special—one of the most unique and compelling books on the shelves right now.

Can’t wait to see where this story goes next.

My extended break is winding down. Classes start back in two weeks, so it’s time to shift gears and start prepping for the quarter ahead. In between course planning, I managed to sneak in some drawing time and tackle Absolute Green Arrow. It started out as a reference study for future animations but I decided to add some color and give it the horror poster treatment.

Super late to Absolute Martian Manhunter, but after hearing all the Eisner buzz I finally picked it up a couple weeks ago and instantly fell in love with it. The book is incredibly creative and visually unlike anything else coming out right now.

What really grabbed me were all of the non-objective 20th century abstract art influences woven throughout the storytelling and visuals. As both an animator and art professor, that immediately inspired me to start experimenting with an animation piece based on the series.

This clip evolved in layers

The opening Poison Ivy transformation was actually something I animated after finishing the first Ivy transformation. It wasn’t part of the original plan, but once the sequence started growing, I wanted to expand the world a bit more and build on that energy.

Later, when I started stitching everything together, I kept thinking about Absolute Batman #17 and how much I wanted to weave in more direct references. That’s when I added Alfred on comms—guiding Batman as he walks deeper into Ivy’s layer.

It became less about just animating action, and more about connecting moments from the issue into one continuous experience.

A collection of some recent work—some explorations from current ideas alongside frames pulled from recent animations.

I was a little late to this one, but I finally picked up Volume 1 of Absolute Martian Manhunter after seeing the Eisner nominations—and loved it. So creative. It’s one of the most inventive comics I’ve read in a while. The way it leans into 20th-century non-objective abstract art really speaks to me. It doesn’t just reference it; it builds its visual language out of it in a way that feels really fresh for superhero storytelling.
