This week's Shepherd Minute: can you remove someone's badge access immediately?

Bruce's answer: yes. With an access control system, you suspend or remove a person's credential right from the software — on your phone or your desktop — and they're locked out of the building immediately.

Compare that to a physical key. If somebody doesn't return one, you're either tracking them down for it or replacing the lock. A credential just gets turned off.

Here's the difference between keys and access control, in one comparison.

A key goes missing, and you're rekeying the building — every affected lock, every remaining keyholder, new keys cut and handed out. A credential goes missing, and you deactivate it in seconds. You can also see where it was last used.

That's why businesses with any staff turnover eventually move. Access control gives you per-door, per-person schedules, a record of who opened what and when, and instant changes when someone leaves.

The good news is it doesn't have to be all at once. Start with high-traffic and sensitive doors, then expand.

Church security is a different problem than most commercial security, and the reason is simple: the building is supposed to be open.

That shapes every decision. The goal is awareness and control, not turning a sanctuary into a fortress. Most congregations want to see the doors — they don't want cameras watching people worship.

When we walk a church, we usually start in three places. The entries actually used during services and midweek. Children's areas and check-in. And offices, safes, and counting rooms.

Two things make churches distinctive. Volunteer teams rotate constantly, so credentials you can issue and revoke easily matter more here than in most businesses. And budgets rarely allow everything at once, which is why a staged plan that handles the highest-risk areas first tends to work better than one big project.
