A quiet truth in the workflow automation conversation: Power Automate does not run natively in on-premises SharePoint.
Not “it is harder.” It does not run there directly. You need an on-premises data gateway just to connect back to the cloud to use it at all. This is per Microsoft's own documentation, not a competitor's talking point.
For cloud-only shops, that is a non-issue. But if you are in banking, healthcare, government, or any environment with strict data-residency rules, this is the whole ballgame, and most “best workflow tool” lists gloss over it by quietly assuming everyone is 100 percent in the cloud.
If on-premises or a sovereign cloud (GCC, GCC High) is part of your reality, the questions change:
- Does the tool run natively inside your own SharePoint farm, with data staying put?
- Or does it route your process data through a gateway to a cloud service?
- Do the AI features run in your own Azure tenant, or a shared external service?
- Are GCC and GCC High actually supported, or just “on the roadmap”?
This is exactly why some regulated teams end up on SharePoint-native platforms that run on-premises with the same no-code toolset they would use online. Not because the cloud tools are bad, but because “cloud-only” is a hard stop when compliance says the data cannot leave the building.
Genuine question for the regulated-industry folks: how much does an on-premises or data-residency requirement narrow your workflow-tool shortlist in practice? It eliminates more options than most vendors admit.
