One of the greatest perks of book design is the deep dive into fascinating subjects. For the past year, I’ve been immersed in editing a book on spiderwebs and the wonders of optics in nature. Today, in honor of Earth Day, I'm sharing this little spider I spotted in my backyard while gardening.

It seems like he’s on a mission, looking for a new spot to create a home after I inadvertently disrupted his habitat. A major challenge in editorial design is conveying ideas with clarity. To achieve that, it’s essential for designers to grasp the concepts thoroughly. This process takes time, as we aren’t all experts in every field. Yet, this is one of my favorite aspects of being a designer—the chance to explore topics I never imagined I would learn about!

There are some images I see, and then they live in my head. This deck has a few cards like that. It was a clear sign that it needed to find a home in my growing collection. The alchemical cards, like the High Priestess, are some of my favorites. I like to see the water and waves in her mind - I also seem to like the blue and green skin tones that make the characters seem even more supernatural.

I have to confess, I'm not an illustrator. My passion in drawing lies in embracing a slow and meditative process. I've hesitated to adopt techniques that could speed things up. When it comes to design, I prefer to collaborate with talented illustrators or source stock images that perfectly align with my clients' visions. Balancing the roles of art director, designer, photographer, and illustrator is no easy feat!

I rely on Envato Elements and maintain a network of creative professionals who excel in their fields. In the creative world, there's simply no substitute for expertise—it takes years of study and practice to truly master a skill. One essential skill we all need is the ability to collaborate effectively, respecting the talents of our fellow artists. While AI is a powerful tool, it can never replicate the unique creative spark that human beings bring to the table.

While editing my fluffy card design appreciation video, I was unhappily surprised to read words in the transcript that sounded like they came out of a dystopia. I always check the auto-generated transcripts for errors, but this result is wild. It’s feeding my growing concerns about the lack of accuracy in today’s technology and our collective vulnerability. For a notable product with a 600+ annual subscription rate, I wouldn’t expect Adobe to have issues like this.
I write about visual languages, and this kind of situation deserves a little spotlight, imo. We need to look closely and fix the errors. The errors are sneaky, but they still create a disturbing effect because I believe we notice these little things, and they add to our sense that something is wrong. Something is wrong here, for sure, and I got a couple of bits of visual evidence to share. Here is the text Adobe transcripts generated from nowhere, and I think it’s a lot of nonsense.
