WOOHOO! ANOTHER YEAR OF KITSCHEN SINK!

We are excited to open up our gallery to up and coming as well as established artists to submit their small works of any medium within the lowbrow/pop-surrealist/figurative & narrative space.

We are bidding adieu to the rules of 12 x 12, so please have as much fun with the dimensions as you like! Although to maximize the amount of artists to be invited we ask you stay to works that are on smaller end.

Visit our website laluzdejesus.com for more information on deadlines and submission guidelines

OPENING TOMORROW

Carrie Ann Baade-Solo Exhibition
Exhibition: September 10- October 1, 2022
Opening Reception - Tomorrow, Saturday, September 10th from 5 pm-9 pm

The magic trick of sawing a woman in half is a performance
The illusion of dismembering and re-membering of the female body
depends mainly on the contortionist skills of the woman folding herself into a tiny box
She folds and unfolds revealing no marks of the saw one her exposed belly
She stands whole, two parts, and then whole again.
All the hard work goes on inside the box

At the 100-year anniversary of this spectacle I ask:
Is the performance of control over a female body only a sublimation, or is the pleasure
derived from it symptomatic of un-expiring fetishistic fantasies and related political
actions?
Is this act of ritualized symbolic dissection, ex*****on, and torture more of a travesty
today than it was a century ago?

All the ways I have been wounded
under the knife of examination
under the scrutiny of the gaze aimed at my parts
taking lessons
reconciling truths

I have been cut into parts
by others
contorted myself through acts of self-deception
and discovery
and put myself back together
Alone
