Rockford Fosgate Punch 700s – Repair
This amplifier came in severely damaged. This type of failure is not typical and is usually caused by customer abuse or prior tampering. I let the customer know up front that it would require an extensive amount of work beyond the original estimate.
This one definitely turned into more than expected and became more of a labor of love, but I am glad to get this old school RF 2 channel back to full operation.
Repaired left channel
Repaired right channel
Reset bias
Replaced thermal compound
Repaired protection circuit
Repaired broken trace / via
Reconditioned pots and switches
This amp is over 10 years old, and you can see in the photos how the thermal compound has dried out. Thermal compound is designed to fill microscopic gaps between the transistor and heatsink to allow efficient heat transfer.
As it ages and dries, it loses thermal conductivity and introduces thermal resistance at that interface. This prevents heat from being properly transferred to the heatsink, causing the devices to retain more heat under load.
The result is reduced thermal efficiency and a greater likelihood of the amplifier entering thermal protection with increasing frequency over time.
If your amplifier has older gray thermal compound, it is a good idea to have it serviced before it leads to failure.
I offer a maintenance and testing service starting at $35 plus (depending on model). This includes replacing thermal compound, resetting bias, and a full test and inspection to ensure proper operation.
If you would like to have your amplifier serviced, please submit a repair ticket using the link below. When creating the ticket, note that you are requesting a maintenance quote instead of a repair.
