Laurie Udesky has been reporting on health and social welfare for more than 15 years. As a foreign correspondent in Turkey, her work appeared in the Dallas Morning News, the San Francisco Examiner, the St. Petersburg Times, salon.com, Macleans magazine, National Public Radio and Consumer Health Interactive. She has written about health and safety hazards facing garment workers and the stigma of mental illness. She has won numerous awards – most recently, for her 2011 piece, “When Foreclosure Threatens Elder-Care Homes," in the New York Times. Udesky talks about niche reporting Saturday.

Do you struggle to find visual approaches to stories that don't seem to have them? Join us Saturday for a workshop from award-winning journalist Carrie Ching, who spent six years as a senior multimedia producer at Center for Investigative Reporting. "It’s like sugar-coating a vitamin," writes Ching, in this recent essay for the Poynter Institute. "Bringing to light serious, important issues is still the goal. But we can borrow from comedy, mystery novels, art—yes, even entertainment—to make it more appealing. We can’t just shovel out oatmeal and expect people to eat it."

Breaking out of traditional journalism formats can be difficult—even unpleasant. New methods are often perceived as a threat. But you can’t just slap TV and newspaper stories onto the Web or mobile or tablets and call that “digital” journalism. The content itself needs to change.
