Do your customers look you up online before they decide to work with you?

If most of your business in San Antonio comes from referrals and relationships, you may assume the answer is no.

A lot of successful owners believe that.

It's an easy conclusion to reach when the phone keeps ringing and you've been in business longer than the Internet has existed.

The thing is, referrals look you up, they just don't mention it.

A true story: A respected business leader won all his work through an exclusive network.

He had a great meeting with a minor celebrity who wanted to hire his firm.

He lost the deal because the prospect searched for his business online and found nothing, so they hired the company they could find.

That happens every day to referral-based businesses.

You never get told why you lost the deal.

So at a minimum, every business needs SEO on its sales pages so people can find you when they search your name or your service.

That's the baseline.

Whether monthly educational SEO makes sense comes down to two additional questions.

See our article for more on that.

Are you wondering if SEO is right for your business? Or if it will help you increase revenue and profits? Use our easy two step process to find out.

Why does one web designer quote you $2,000 and another quotes $15,000 for what sounds like the same website?

If you've collected a few proposals for your business, you've probably had that happen to you.

It's confusing and it can make you feel like someone is trying to take advantage of you.

Quotes rarely spell out what's actually included, so there's no way to compare them fairly on the page.

Here are some ranges.

In San Antonio, custom sites typically run $5,500 to $11,000 and template builds run $1,000 to $3,000.

Austin runs higher at $6,000 to $12,000. Houston runs $7,000 to $15,000. McAllen sits lowest at $3,500 to $7,000.

A $4,000 quote with 10 custom pages, professional wording, SEO and a year of maintenance is a better deal than a $3,000 quote for 5 pages with no content and no SEO.

Ask every designer for a written breakdown. How many pages. Who writes the content. Is SEO included. Do you own the files. What happens after launch.

Compare those and the right choice usually becomes more obvious for your situation.

The ultimate goal is that your new website should get more of your favorite customers than your existing website.

Is local SEO actually worth the money for your business?

You may have been pitched on local SEO a lot, probably by someone who told you every business needs it.

That's actually not true and it's a big reason owners in San Antonio hesitate.

Most agencies won't tell you when you're a bad fit.

Here's the number that will help you decide.

What is one customer worth to you for as long as they stay with you?

Also known as Lifetime Customer Value.

If a new client brings $8,000 and search delivers two a month, the spend is easy to defend.

If your average sale is $40 and customers rarely come back, the math doesn't make sense or you'd need a ton of volume to make it work.

Home services, health and personal care and professional services tend to see strong returns because ticket values are high and people search with clear intent.

The lower the ticket price, the less likely investing in Local SEO would make sense.

So know and run the numbers before you commit a dollar.

A good return is three to five times your spend, and it tends to climb as your pages mature.

Our article below gives you the checklist so you can decide for yourself.

What does local SEO cost in Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and other Texas cities? This guide compares monthly pricing, ROI and what drives the numbers.

Should you pay for ads or invest in showing up in search (aka SEO)?

If you're a local business owner in San Antonio with a limited marketing budget, this may be the question you keep circling back to.

Ads get you leads tomorrow. Search rankings take months.

Both cost money and it may be hard to know which one you should go with right now.

In an ideal situation, it's better to do both as it means more of your market will know you exist.

Also, these two channels aren't really competing, they do different jobs.

With paid ads you're renting visibility.

You can be live in 24 hours, but the leads stop the day you stop paying and the cost per click climbs as more businesses bid against you.

With local SEO you're building something you own.

Traction usually takes 3 to 6 months, then each new lead costs less as your traffic compounds.

A page that ranks acts like an ad you paid for once that keeps running for years.

So how do you pick the right one today?

If you need leads this week, start with ads.

If you're playing a long game and want a lower cost per lead over time, build search.

If your budget allows, run both and let ads carry you while search builds.

Either way, aim for a return of three to five times your spend.

Our article below compares them side by side.

Should your small business invest in local SEO or PPC ads? Compare speed, cost, ROI, and long-term value, plus when to run both for the best results.

When someone in San Antonio searches for what you do, does your business show up on the map?

You may have set up a Google Business Profile years ago and not touched it since.

Or it might not exist at all.

Plenty of local owners are in that spot and it's understandable.

It's free, it's not on anyone's calendar to take care of.

That's exactly why it gets skipped.

But, Google decides who appears in the map results based on how complete your profile is, your business description, your categories, your photos and your reviews.

The amount of reviews matters. So does how recent they are.

A listing with a pile of old reviews can slowly fall off the map while a competitor who collects reviews every month climbs above you.

Every one of those searches is someone in your area ready to call somebody today.

If they can't find you, they call your competitors.

Thankfully, a profile is free to set up and can start showing in search fairly quickly.

From there it's collecting reviews regularly and posting weekly.

That's free local marketing that keeps sending you your favorite customers month after month.

Our step by step guide below walks through the whole setup.

In this step-by-step guide, we’re going to walk through, How to Get Your Business on Google Maps in San Antonio.

Have you ever been quoted a price for website wording and had no idea if it was fair?

Most local business owners in San Antonio focus their budget on design and development.

Then somewhere in the middle of the project, it turns out someone has to write the actual words.

Copywriting rates are all over the map and there's no obvious way to tell good value from overpriced.

Here's the range.

Professional copywriters charge $100 to $500 or more per page, or $0.10 to $1.00 per word, or $50 to $150 per hour.

Entry level work runs $100 to $200 a page and reads fine but won't be strategic.

The $200 to $350 range gets you a writer who understands search and your brand voice.

For a small business site with 8 to 12 pages, expect $2,000 to $4,000 for professional wording.

The thing is, a beautiful website with weak wording won't perform as well as a decent design with strong messaging.

The wording is what turns visitors into leads and sales.

Instead, plan for copywriting at the start instead of scrambling for it later.

Our article below breaks down every pricing model and what you get at each tier.

Are you wondering how much it costs to have someone write wording for your website? Or how much should you budget for website content?

Are you making marketing decisions based on numbers or based on a feeling?

Most local business owners in San Antonio are running on instinct.

And of course, you know your customers and you know your market.

What you may not have is a clear view of the math behind your sales.

Between payroll, customers and everything else, sitting down to model a funnel isn't at the top of the list.

Instead, you might pour money into more traffic when the real issue is that your site converts 1% instead of 3% to 5%.

Or you might chase leads when your close rate is already strong and you just don't have enough visitors.

Both mistakes cost you months and thousands of dollars, and you won't know which one you made until the year is over.

The good news is that this is fixable.

We built two free tools for local business owners.

One shows you what it takes to reach your revenue goal.

The other pinpoints what's blocking you right now.

Both run in your browser, both are free and neither one asks for your email.

You can use both tools below.

What would it actually take to hit your revenue goal next month?

You may have a number in your head for what you want your San Antonio business to make.

What's usually missing is the path from that number back to the daily work.

Revenue goals get set at the top and nobody breaks them down into visitors, leads and sales.

Let's say you want $50,000 a month and your average sale is $5,000, you need 10 sales a month.

At a 20% to 60% close rate, that's roughly 17 to 50 leads.

At a 3% to 5% visitor to lead rate, that's hundreds of local visitors every single month.

When you see the traffic number, you find out whether your goal is close or whether your marketing is nowhere near the size it needs to be.

Without those numbers, you're hoping.

Our free tool below does the math for you. Nothing is stored and no email is required.

Use our free sales projection tool and we'll instantly tell you how many website visitors, leads and sales you need to hit your monthly sales goals.

Do you know exactly where your sales are getting stuck?

Most local business owners in San Antonio can feel that something isn't working, but they can't point to the exact cause.

Leads may be slow, or leads come in and don't turn into sales.

It probably feels like a general problem instead of a specific one.

That's normal.

The fix tends to be more like guessing: more ads, a new logo, another marketing person.

Here's why that matters.

Your funnel has four points where money leaks out.

Monthly visitors, visitors to leads, leads to sales and your average sale amount.

A healthy site turns 3% to 5% of visitors into leads.

Good businesses close 20% to 60% of the leads they get.

If your visitor to lead number is sitting at 1%, then doubling your traffic just doubles the number of people who leave.

You'd be spending more to fix the wrong thing.

But…

Once you know which of the four numbers is your actual bottleneck, you know where to put your time and money.

Then every dollar you spend helps move your business forward.

That's how you get more of your favorite customers instead of wasting time and money.

Our free tool below pinpoints the bottleneck in about two minutes.

All the math happens in your browser and nothing is stored.

No email required.

Use our free sales diagnostic tool and we'll instantly pinpoint what is blocking your business from hitting your sales goals and how to fix it.

When was the last time anyone on your team updated your website?

If you run a local business in San Antonio, your site may have been built a few years ago and left alone since.

It looks fine when you check it, so there's no reason to think anything is wrong.

That's how most owners feel and it makes sense.

But both content and WordPress core and every plugin on your website should get updated regularly.

When that doesn't happen, it can affect your leads and sales.

And…

Hackers run programs 24 hours a day looking for sites that haven't been updated.

Once they're in, they'll take what they can and install their own links to redirect your traffic somewhere else.

We've seen a client's site show links to illegal movies instead of their services.

Even without a break-in, a page that loads strangely will send visitors away.

You get 3 to 5 seconds to engage someone before they leave for a competitor.

Referral-based businesses lose sales this way every day and never find out.

The good news is that this is fixable.

Core software and plugins need updating at least every 30 days, along with security checks, speed tests and broken link repairs.

Do that and your website stays online and working while you focus on your customers.

If you want to see what regular website care actually involves, our page below walks you through it.
