This is a painting done from a live model at the studio of “, who makes it possible for remote artists to join his group via Zoom. I used to paint direct, wet-in-wet all the time, but in recent years I have become consumed in layers, so this was a good practice piece for a change. The model was a cool blues musician named Peter Tighe, and I enjoyed his performance during the session and his great expression.

I painted this as a test of how far I could develop a portrait from a Zoom session screen shot. Usually I sketch from Zoom for 2-3 hours for valuable drawing practice in charcoal or pastel pencil. I felt like this model’s extraordinary face compelled more attention, so I painted this 9x12 on a linen panel in oils with several layers. Thanks to Karen at and to the model, Kenyatta Ali, for this inspiring pose.

When I was growing up, my mother hung a painting of a vase of flowers on the wall above our kitchen table. Every meal, every homework assignment, every family game night, I internalized the beauty of those summer flowers. Years later I was able to plant my own cutting garden and fill my house with wonderful fragrance and color. Here is a new painting of some of my peonies. Thinking it may make a nice Mother’s Day gift for someone.
