🚨 NEW SCAM ALERT: Think Before You Scan!
Scammers have a new twist on the family-emergency and government-impersonation scam.
You may receive a call saying that you owe a fine, have a legal problem, or that a family member has been arrested. The scammer then sends you a QR code or barcode and tells you to take it to a store and load money onto it.
They may even use AI voice cloning to sound like someone you know.
Remember:
Police and government agencies will NEVER demand immediate payment through a QR code or barcode at a retail store.
If you receive a call like this:
📞 Hang up.
🛑 Don't scan or pay anything.
👨👩👧 Call your family member directly.
🔎 Contact the agency yourself using its official phone number.
Please share this with a parent, grandparent, friend, or neighbor. A five-minute conversation could save someone thousands of dollars.
