Middle Dune offers handmade paper goods, specializing in notebooks, blank journals, and pocket-size jotters. Using a variety of techniques and materials, all goods are hand cut, bound, carved, and printed with care in Somerville, MA. Middle Dune paper goods are the creation of Sylvia Tomayko-Peters, a craftsperson writer, and digital artist. The name Middle Dune derives from an affectionate nickna
me for the house in which she grew up, on the lovely Cape Cod, MA. In the house her parents built themselves, perched on top of a sand dune, the family often said that the beach was one more dune to the west and the road, one more dune to the east. Hence, the house was nestled atop the "middle dune." After graduating from Brown University, Sylvia felt a need to break away from the nine-to-five and return to her roots, getting creative with her hands. Raised by two visual artists, the desire to create has been instilled in her for as far back as memories go. After taking several courses during her years in college, bookmaking became the ideal project; the perfect combination of her love of pen and paper and her art-making impulses. Sylvia's books are hand designed and crafted. The majority of papers used in her products are also hand printed, created from designs Sylvia carves herself. If you asked her what her favorite part of the bookbinding process is, she'd have to answer sewing a coptic stitch binding!
