I took this photo on a walk I almost didn’t take.
Some days the “not fitting in” feeling doesn’t show up as a big dramatic thing. It’s quieter than that. It’s opening Instagram and comparing myself to what looks successful from the outside, wondering if I’m supposed to be doing that too. I’m not.
I spent a lot of years trying to sand myself down to fit somewhere: school, mom groups, rooms full of “real” designers who all seemed to know something I didn’t. Turns out I wasn’t missing some secret. I just hadn’t figured out yet that the parts of me that felt like too much, or not enough, or just different, were never the problem. They’re the whole reason a client will pick Mill St. Creative over literally anyone else.
That’s the thing nobody tells you about branding: sameness doesn’t protect you. It just makes you forgettable. The businesses that actually stick are the ones brave enough to sound like one specific, slightly odd, very real person…not a template.
So if you’ve ever felt like you don’t quite fit the mold in your industry, I’d love to tell you that’s not a flaw. That’s your whole brand, waiting to be built.
Swipe through and if this is you, I’m all ears in the comments.
