Don’t be crappy to each other. Life is hard enough sometimes.

Yesterday, three people put some crappy comments on a Facebook ad of mine for a class that I’m teaching on Monday. I couldn’t tell if they were serious or not until one of them kept coming at me. So I decided to delete the comments and block them from my Instagram profile.

One called me a grifter. The other two said that I must not be able to draw. Why?

Because I used AI for a graphic rather than take the time to make my own.

One of the classes I’m teaching on Monday is for 2-8 graders to teach them how to draw cartoons and comics. They concluded that if I used AI to create an ad, I must not know what I’m talking about or have the ability. And the way they wrote it was just rude. Ultimately they were asking, “why?”

Well, it’s faster.

I had only posted that specific ad one day prior and it was only going to run for three days. A last minute effort to try and gain a few more students before we got started.

Why is faster important to me?

The last two months have been incredibly hard for our family. We own three businesses; an animal hospital, a pet supply store, and my art business. We have six children with one more due in August. Our youngest has had two neck surgeries in the past two months and was in the ER last Monday. My two young adult children needed some help with things. Our high school kid had end of year band commitments. I was wrapping up a public mural. My 69 year old mom hurt her back. My in-laws moved to Arizona. One of my oldest friends had been struggling and needed an intervention. And a million other things.

In other words, I have been extremely busy. Many of these things can be seen on my socials since I’m pretty open.

Making the ad to the same quality as AI did would take about two hours rather than 1 minute. It’s not that I can’t make it - the bigger question is why wouldn’t I use it given my circumstances?

Can I make it? Of course. Can I teach the class? Of course.

First, I am 47 years old and have loved and made art since I was 3. I won a few awards in high school for regional competitions. I studied fine art skills in community college out of high school. I took time off when my family started. I went back in 2006 to The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and graduated in 2009 with a B. Sc. in Media Arts and Animation. I started my art business in 2015 and have done numerous works and commissions after that. I went back to get my MBA between 2016-2018. During the first few years I did a lot of graphic design and branding work until I switched to fine art in 2018. I got my first public facing studio in 2023 where I began teaching. I’ve served a few hundred people so far and it’s growing. I continue to pursue my fine art career along the way participating in regional art fairs. All of this is public information on my socials and all my collectors have my originals, prints, etc.

So yeah, I could make that graphic. And yes, I can teach that class and many others that I have been teaching.

But why would I spend two hours on it when I could just use AI to solve that one tiny problem? I have lots of stuff on my plate that is more important than making a single graphic.

It bothered me the rest of the day yesterday, and I thought about how I wanted to respond. So, I decided to bring it here and simply say, “Don’t be crappy to each other.”

You have no idea what someone else is going through.

The reason I started teaching was because the people who were seeing my work asked me to. Adults want to learn what I’ve learned. And kids in our small city do not have very many positive outlets. The classes have gone really well overall, and I plan to keep offering them.

Being called a grifter and a phony and insulted due to their own feelings of whether artists should be using AI for any reason is ridiculous. Is AI problematic? Sure. Is it going away? Not in the short term. To some degree, we all have to figure this out. Am I using AI to pass work off as my own? Of course not. I have been working on my skills for over 40 years. Art is something I have always loved and worked at.

The irony to me is that these people were photographers. They use technology for image making. It felt a bit hypocritical. Between all of us, I’m the one who could actually draw the graphic. And probably better than AI did.

Bottom line is, why are we treating our fellow humans like that when so many things in our world are already so hard? We need to think about that before we write nasty comments.

Agree? Disagree? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

(But don’t be nasty. I’m getting real fond of the block button. 😂)

Our latest news

Dear friends,

I wanted to share this article I wrote about the process I just went through over the past several months. I got the opportunity to paint a mural in my hometown, and I just recently finished it. I wanted to share that with you and give you a peek behind the scenes.

Next, my goal is to get back to the body of work I've been working on. I'm hoping to have an exhibition later this year. I'll keep you informed!

Lastly, the next session of art classes starts in early June. I'll include the link below.

Hope you're doing well!! This year is flying by...

Best,

Adam

Upcoming Classes

I added two additional classes in June on Mondays on top of our ongoing Friday programs. There are 5 different classes available for kids and adults in the upcoming session. After that later this summer, I decided to just keep the classes on Fridays for now. I may have pop-up classes in the evenings or weekends as time permits, but I'm trying to protect Mondays for my own personal studio time.

For now, I'm still at our family pet store Tuesdays through Thursdays and the weekends are usually time to spend with our family and friends as well as rest and recover.

Fresh From the Easel

Hello friends,

It’s been a fun and busy few years diving head-first into the art world. I’ve learned so much, met so many wonderful people, and had countless meaningful conversations along the way. I’m incredibly grateful for all of the encouragement and support as I continue to grow, create, and pursue this path.
I wanted to share a few updates about the direction of my artwork and studio moving forward.

First, I’m excited to share that Afterpay is now connected to my Square website, making it much easier and more flexible to purchase original artwork over time. I’ll be sharing a few examples below so you can see how the payment options work.
Over the past several years, I’ve also started to understand just how special it is to live with original artwork. Originals become part of people’s homes and stories. They’re personal. They’re unique. Because of that, I’ve decided to begin framing more of my original paintings professionally so they feel complete and ready to live beautifully in a space for years to come.

I’ve also decided to slow down significantly on offering open and limited edition prints. This was not an easy decision, but I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the kind of artist I want to become and the kind of work I want to spend my life creating.

There are many different paths in the art world, and I realized that what matters most to me is creating meaningful original paintings that feel personal, lasting, and one-of-a-kind. While I will still occasionally create prints, cards, calendars, puzzles, and other fun items in smaller quantities, I want the heart of my work to remain the paintings themselves.

More than anything, I want to continue pursuing the mastery of painting and focus my energy on creating the strongest work I possibly can.

I’ll also continue offering FREE shipping on everything purchased through my website to keep the experience simple and enjoyable for collectors.

Lastly, thank you.

Truly.

Your support, encouragement, conversations, shares, purchases, and belief in my work have meant more to me than you probably realize. Every kind word and every person who has followed along on this journey has helped me continue moving forward.

I’m planning to host a show toward the end of this year in my new studio space, and I’ll send out more details once I finalize the date.

You guys are the best.

– Adam

Did you know? I’m painting a mural!

There’s a lot happening in the city right now. While we tend to focus on big ticket projects like roundabouts and the Community Events Center, there are many small things happening too. These projects, done by individuals, groups, and the city, are collectively making a big difference in our commu...

We just had to share!

I wanted to send this out to make sure everyone knew - our next three classes start on February 20th.

10 am - a 5-week watercolor painting class for adults - a good way to master the basics and make a finished piece!
1 pm - a 5-week drawing and painting session for adults - the next part of our annual curriculum to build this foundation
4 pm - a 5-week kids class with all new topics - the kids are having a great time!

PLUS - I'm moving into a space twice as large right behind my current space. We can fit up to 20 students easily. Super excited about this next step!

To look at the current classes and possibly register for one, use the button below.

Adam
