Having been both an undergrad and a grad student at ASU, as well as a resident of Tempe, I read this article and wanted to share some thoughts. https://www.statepress.com/article/2025/10/politics-tempe-residents-campus-expansion
As the student population at ASU grows, it’s normal that nearby neighborhoods are feeling the impact. More students are renting off-campus, which can sometimes raise concerns among long-term residents about noise, parking, or the changing character of the area. These concerns are understandable—but they are only part of the story. In reality, students bring many benefits that enrich our community, and it’s worth taking a closer look at how their presence adds value.
First, students contribute energy and diversity. They come from across the country and around the world, bringing with them different cultures, traditions, and perspectives, and helps foster greater understanding and connection across generations and backgrounds.
Second, students are an important part of the local economy. They shop at Tempe grocery stores, eat at Tempe restaurants, and support our small businesses. Their demand for goods and services helps keep businesses thriving and, in many cases, allows new ones to take root. What might be seen as a short-term rental market is also an ongoing cycle of fresh customers and economic vitality.
Finally, students contribute to the culture of our neighborhoods. Whether it’s through art shows, public lectures, performances, or community events, their creativity and curiosity spill over from the classroom into our shared spaces. give back in meaningful ways, volunteering, tutoring, mentoring and more. Their academic work often connects directly to local challenges—through research projects, internships, and partnerships that can benefit the broader community. They bring ideas that spark conversation and inspire change, keeping our community vibrant and forward-looking.
Of course, the transient nature of students can create friction. But instead of focusing on what separates us, we have an opportunity to focus on what students add. By welcoming them as neighbors, we strengthen the fabric of the community.
College students are not just passing through; they are part of the life of our neighborhoods. Their presence makes our community more dynamic, diverse, and resilient. Recognizing their contributions is the first step in building stronger connections between campus and community.
