A couple of weeks ago, I was in Redondo Beach on a holiday weekend. It was quintessential LA weather – 78 and sunny– yet, the local skate park was completely empty.

Not ‘just a few skateboarders’ empty. There was not a single person in an otherwise clean, safe, and easy-to-access skate park. Having grown up during a boom in skateboarding culture in the 90s, I was shocked.

Where are all the skaters?

As a founder, I've learned to be so careful about where I put my attention. There's just so much crap out there, especially in the business/marketing category, and most of it focuses on speed, hacks, trends, tactics and other shallow scale. Not only do I find it completely uninspired, the pace of it is disrupting my nervous system.
For me, being an entrepreneur is inherently a creative act. Your business is your canvas.
Particularly in a creative field, this means that your output is directly impacted by what you're exposed to. And that requires you to have time and space to explore and to seek out inspiration in unexpected places.

Here's three places I've found inspiration lately that are worth sharing with you!

We've lost the plot. A business' job used to be provide a value to their customers and their community in exchange for money. Today, all the focus is on scaling like it's a game. It's no wonder loyalty is at an all-time low.

I love a fashion collab or crossover when it's unexpected - these 3 brands nailed it. Creative and original. Fuggler's takeover on the streets of NY fashion week to create brand awareness for their line of stuffies. Duolingo's phonetic collection (teaching us all how to properly pronounce 'Jacquemus'). And Hoxton's collab with Lacoste available only through room service at the hotel.
Stepping outside of your category - whether for an activation or collaboration - can be a great way to extend your audience, but it requires you to be strong in your own brand identity first.
