In my late 20s, I looked like I had it all together.

I was married, had two children, a growing career, promotions, and a new home.

But internally, I felt completely empty.

I struggled to get out of bed.
I was exhausted all the time.
And eventually, I learned I was depressed.

What I realized in therapy changed me:

I had been giving 100% of myself to everyone else — my work, my family, my community while giving nothing to myself.

My tank was empty.

And one of the biggest lessons from that season was this:

Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It’s necessary.

Because when you’re constantly running on empty, eventually everything suffers — including you.

Now, I pay much closer attention to what keeps me grounded, rested, and emotionally okay.

And honestly, this is one of the reasons I started Ignite Ambition.

I wanted to create a space where professionals could talk not just about success, but also about the pressures, fears, and challenges that often stay hidden behind achievement.

Because real growth happens when people feel seen, supported, and reminded that they do not have to carry everything alone.

They create space for honest conversations around:
📌 Growth
📌 Ambition
📌 Uncertainty
📌 Navigating your career with intention

I’ll personally be joining the session, and if you’ve ever questioned your next step, felt professionally stuck, or simply want to hear honest perspectives from other ambitious people,I’d genuinely encourage you to join us.

One thing I’ve observed throughout my career is this:

Some of the most influential leaders were not necessarily the smartest people in the room.

They were simply exceptional communicators.

At the same time, I’ve seen incredibly talented people get overlooked because they struggled to communicate their ideas clearly in leadership settings.

Their capability was there. But their communication didn’t always allow others to fully see it.

That’s why communication is one of the most important leadership skills you can develop.

Because leadership isn’t just about having good ideas. It’s about communicating them in a way people understand, trust, remember, and act on.

A few things I’ve learned:
• Simplify before trying to impress
• Focus on clarity, not complexity
• Pay attention to whether people understand you the first time
• Practice speaking with confidence and brevity

People often associate clear communication with competence.

And whether we like it or not, how you communicate shapes how people experience your leadership.

📚 We’ll be exploring lessons like these inside this month’s Ignite Ambition Book Club as we reflect on Unapologetically Ambitious together.

During one of our recent AMA sessions, a woman asked a question that I think far more professionals struggle with than they realize:

“How do I know if I’m truly succeeding in my role?”

One of the biggest career mistakes people make is assuming success is only about hitting the goals listed in their job description.

But often, success is also tied to expectations that were never clearly said out loud.

That’s why one of the most important questions you can ask your manager especially in a new role is: “Help me understand what success looks like to you.”

Because the difference between “meeting expectations” and “exceeding expectations” often comes down to understanding what’s actually being evaluated.

This is exactly why I value our monthly AMA sessions inside Ignite Ambition.

They create space for honest conversations, practical insights, and real leadership lessons that help people grow with more clarity and intention.

I was in my early 30s when I realized something that completely changed the direction of my career:

I wanted to become a board member.

At the time, I started researching everything I could:
• Who serves on boards?
• What experiences do they have?
• What skills are boards actually looking for?

And the more I learned, the more intentional I became.

One thing became very clear:
Board seats rarely happen by accident.

They come from building the right experience, visibility, and relationships over time.

That realization shaped many of my decisions moving forward — including my goal of becoming a CEO, because I understood how closely leadership experience and board opportunities were connected.

Years later, after becoming a CEO and intentionally building my network, a recruiter placed me on my first board.

Here’s the lesson:

Don’t wait until you want the opportunity to start preparing for it.

Start building the skills, credibility, and relationships now for the future you want later.

Early in my career, I had a manager who reacted emotionally to everything.

When things were good, the energy was high.
When something went wrong, the negativity took over the room.

And the entire team felt it.

Later, I worked with a leader who handled challenges very differently. Whenever something went wrong, he’d calmly say:

“Okay, let’s understand what’s happening here.”

That stayed with me.

Because great leadership isn’t about reacting emotionally.
It’s about creating calm when things feel uncertain.

Since then, I’ve always tried to lead that way:
steady, thoughtful, and focused on facts instead of panic.

One of the strongest things a leader can do is pause before reacting.

Breathe.
Ask questions.
Understand the situation first.

Because the leaders people trust most are often the ones who bring clarity, not chaos.

📚 This is one of the many conversations we’ll continue having inside the Ignite Ambition Book Club.

I received a message last night that genuinely made me emotional.

It said:

“I’ve ordered at least 15 copies of your book to share with the high school students I mentor… as a reminder that I believe in them and am here as they navigate their own unapologetically ambitious journeys.”

Messages like this stay with me.

Over the years, so many people have reached out after reading Unapologetically Ambitious.

Some said it gave them the courage to finally take the next step.
Others shared that it helped them let go of fears they had carried for years.

And that’s the power of honest stories and practical lessons shared openly.

It’s also one of the reasons we decided to launch the Ignite Ambition Book Club.

Not just to read books, but to learn from the people behind them.

A space where professionals from around the world can come together to:
📌 Reflect
📌 Share perspectives
📌 Learn from one another
📌 Have deeper conversations around growth and leadership

What I love most is that it encourages people to slow down.

To read more intentionally.
To reflect more honestly.
And to actually apply what they’re learning.

Because sometimes, the right book discussed with the right people, can change the direction of your life.

If you’re in a season where you want to grow, think bigger, and surround yourself with ambitious people doing the same, we’d love to have you join us.

Today is a really exciting day for us.

Something we’ve been working on for months is finally becoming a reality:
The launch of the Ignite Ambition Book Club.

Over the years, we’ve had incredible leaders share their experiences, insights, and lessons with our community.

But I kept thinking about something else:

So many of these leaders have already poured their wisdom into books — stories, decisions, challenges, and lessons people can learn from long after the conversation ends.

And that’s what inspired this next step.

A space where our community can come together to:
📌 Read intentionally
📌 Reflect deeply
📌 Have meaningful conversations about growth, leadership, and ambition

And there felt like no better place to begin than with *Unapologetically Ambitious.*

I wrote this book because throughout my career, I faced moments that tested me in ways I never expected.

What helped me move forward wasn’t having all the answers.

It was learning how to navigate uncertainty, make difficult decisions, and keep moving even when the path wasn’t clear.

My hope has always been that these lessons help others do the same.

Because most people don’t get stuck from lack of ambition.

They get stuck because they’re navigating hard moments without enough guidance, perspective, or support.

And sometimes, the right conversation around the right book can change that.

📚 Join us as we begin this journey together on May 13.
