I like to surprise Rachel Sullivan Photography with date nights, and part of the fun is making the invitation! We’ll be going to the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presentation of Rachmaninoff & Ravel at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, so I whipped this little guy up. I’m also including the artwork sans text, since I’m pretty sure it’s the first time I’ve ever drawn a cello and it has *far* more spirals and angles than I expected.

I picked up a new pen not too long ago, a piston blade pen made by illustrator Dan Berry. It’s really interesting to draw with, and it’s been fun playing around to get a feel for it. As practice, I drew this Ford Motor Co. Hanlon Lincoln hearse from the early 1900s, which seemed appropriate given the season. Plus hearses are just cool and I’ll take any excuse to draw them.

This is Vida Health Village - formerly Alta - in north Orlando, designed by Charlan Brock Architects (the architecture firm where I work). It was a great excuse to get comfortable with another new fountain pen I just bought, plus it’s a good exercise to draw in more grounded three-dimensionality. Most of what I draw tends to be stylized and flattened, but I really do admire the ability to sketch architecturally, so this is kind of a foray into that.

As a bonus peek behind the creative process curtain (if you’re into that kind of thing), this is actually the third version of this drawing. The proportions were all wrong in the first one, and the perspective got too skewed in the second. So this particular Goldilocks drawing took about 6 hours from beginning to end, and that was aided by using a lightbox to transfer the general shapes over from the second attempt. I say this to illustrate (ha) two things: That the process isn’t always just a linear Point A to Point B, and that it takes time to do this sort of thing.

You see tons of videos of people drawing and painting sped up super fast to under a minute – I’ve done plenty myself, and they’re fun to watch! But I think they also give a false impression of speediness, and can make artists feel like they’re doing something wrong if they aren’t that fast. Things take hours, days, weeks, and so on, and I think it’s healthy to have a reminder of that.

Since I don’t typically do anything for Valentine’s Day, this is our most recent New Year’s card. It’s a fun little thing to put together at the end of the year, and I decided to go with a lovely Krampus, since you can’t go wrong there as far as I’m concerned. Yes, we sent it out in the middle of January. It’s fine! I figure it’s a nice unexpected surprise at that point.

C is for Camel. The dromedary camel, in this case.

Did you know that camels can hold grudges? It's been written that a camel that’s been injured by a person will bide his time before taking revenge with bites and kicks. I, for one, can identify with that mentality. Especially the biting part.

The process timelapse from last week’s Garcia House study. (I cut out a solid 30 seconds of me just trying different brushes. It’s not interesting 😅) I like that Procreate just records this automatically!

I’d never played with Procreate until last week, when my buddy Javier lent me his iPad for a couple hours. It’s pretty cool! I’ve only ever really used Photoshop and Wacom tablets, so it was a bit of a different - and fun - experience. Anyway, I decided to do a study of John Lautner’s iconic and beautiful Garcia House, designed in 1962. It’s a true design inspiration!

Recently I was asked to illustrate a wedding invitation for two of my favorite people, Melanie Conway and Blair Troop. We wanted it to be a fun piece with a tropical flavor for their Orlando wedding, and I found inspiration in mid-century travel and airline posters, which are a real goldmine of design. It should be no surprise that I study lots of art and graphic design from that era, and even though I primarily work on a computer, I still want everything to feel handmade. I try to preserve things like visible brush strokes and imperfections, and the type is completely hand-drawn because it’s just plain fun to do. All in all, I’m really happy with the end result!

While working on a project last night, I took a quick break and doodled this little self portrait off to the side. I pretty much always start with the character’s head and work down from there, but this time I started at the feet and went up. It felt weird! But good to disrupt my normal flow.

B is for Bison.

Another animal illustration, playing with shapes, poses, and color palettes. While collecting reference images I found one of a leaping bison, which was kind of unexpected. Turns out they have a vertical jump of 6 feet! Who knew?
