Storm Update

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across central and northern Nebraska this evening before organizing into a larger complex and moving east/southeast overnight.

For the Omaha metro, the primary concerns later tonight into Tuesday morning will be strong winds, heavy rainfall and some hail. The strongest portions of the line could produce wind gusts of 60–70 mph.

As for Tuesday afternoon, the severe weather setup we were watching has become more conditional. Tonight’s storms may push the primary boundary south of Omaha and limit how much the atmosphere can recover Tuesday.

If we clear out quickly Tuesday and that boundary remains nearby, redevelopment could still produce large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado. Right now, however, the better chance for that redevelopment appears to be south of the Omaha metro.

We’ll watch how tonight’s storms evolve and reassess Tuesday’s threat in the morning.

Tuesday Bears Watching Omaha Metro

There is a growing signal for the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms across the Central Plains Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The environment could support moderate to strong instability, steep lapse rates and 40+ mph of effective wind shear. If storms can develop individually early enough, large hail and damaging winds would be possible before storms potentially grow into a larger complex later in the evening.

For Omaha, we’re not sounding the alarms yet.

We’ve seen this setup several times this summer — impressive parameters a day or two out, only for storms to organize west or north of Omaha and eventually arrive as an overnight complex producing mainly heavy rain and gusty winds.

Tuesday does have some ingredients that make it worth watching, particularly the potential for earlier, more isolated storm development. Where the front ultimately sets up will be important.

We’ll have a much better idea as the higher-resolution models get within range Monday.

For now: Tuesday bears watching. Nothing more, nothing less.

Weather Update

Today will be warm and dry with highs near 90°.

A few showers and thunderstorms are expected to move into eastern Nebraska after midnight Monday night. Most storms should be weakening as they approach the Omaha metro, and severe weather is not expected at this time.

Tuesday bears watching. A stalled front will be nearby, and if thunderstorms can develop during the afternoon or evening, a few could become strong. Confidence remains moderate, as it’s still uncertain whether storms will be able to initiate.

The highest confidence period for rain is Wednesday. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected, with a corridor from Lincoln through Omaha into southwest Iowa having the potential to receive 1.5 to 2 inches of rainfall.

We’ll continue to monitor Tuesday’s storm potential as newer data comes in.

Omaha Weather Update

Showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread today, with the greatest potential for stronger storms arriving this evening into the overnight hours.

The primary threats will be damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding, with small hail also possible. Some locations could see rainfall rates over 2 inches per hour.

Storms move out by early Friday, followed by a much more comfortable stretch of weather. Highs will settle into the upper 70s and lower 80s Friday, with low to mid 80s this weekend.

Bottom line: Stay weather aware this evening, especially if you have outdoor plans. Much cooler and drier weather arrives for the weekend.

Omaha Weather Update

A few isolated showers or storms are possible through this evening, but the better chance for rain arrives late tonight and Thursday.

The main round of thunderstorms is expected Thursday evening into early Friday, with the potential for damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and small hail. Localized rainfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour in the strongest storms.

Behind the system, drier air moves in for the weekend with highs in the 80s to low 90s and noticeably lower humidity.

Bottom line: Keep an eye on the forecast Thursday evening, as the best chance for impactful weather arrives then.

Omaha Weather Update

Today is the last day of this dangerous heat wave, with heat index values still reaching 105-118° this afternoon.

A few showers and thunderstorms are possible overnight into Tuesday, but coverage will be scattered. Any storm that holds together could produce gusty winds, though widespread severe weather is not expected.

The good news: temperatures fall back into the upper 80s and lower 90s Tuesday and Wednesday, with additional chances for rain arriving Thursday and Friday.

Bottom line: One more day of dangerous heat, then a welcome break arrives for the rest of the week.

Omaha Weather Update

Dangerous heat continues across the Omaha metro today, with heat index values expected to reach 110-118° this afternoon. An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms this evening, mainly north and northeast of Omaha. If storms develop, they could produce damaging wind gusts up to 75 mph.

Monday will remain very hot, especially south of I-80, before a cold front begins bringing slightly lower humidity and more seasonable temperatures later this week.

Bottom line: Make heat safety your priority today. If you’re spending time outdoors, stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and never leave children or pets in a vehicle.

Omaha Weather Update

Rain chances increase late tonight into Friday morning, with many areas picking up 0.25 to 1 inch of rain. The heaviest totals are expected across southeast Nebraska.

Once the rain moves out Friday, temperatures begin climbing quickly.

* Saturday: Highs in the mid 90s to near 100°, heat index 100-105°.
* Sunday & Monday: Dangerous heat returns with highs near 100° and heat index values between 105-115°. Heat alerts are likely.

A cold front is expected early next week, bringing some relief and returning temperatures closer to normal.

Bottom line: Enjoy the cooler weather while it lasts. Dangerous heat is set to return this weekend.

Omaha Weather Update

Relief is finally on the way.

A cold front will move through the metro this afternoon and evening, bringing a chance for scattered thunderstorms. If storms develop, damaging wind gusts will be the primary threat, with the greatest potential north and east of Omaha.

Behind the front, much cooler air arrives. Highs fall into the 80s Tuesday and upper 70s to lower 80s Wednesday through Friday. Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are possible late Wednesday through Friday, with some areas picking up much-needed rainfall.

Looking ahead, the cooler stretch won’t last. Warmer temperatures are expected to return this weekend and may continue into early August.

Omaha Weather Update

Monday will be the hottest day of the year so far.

Expect highs in the upper 90s to near 100°, with heat index values between 105° and 110°. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for the entire area.

During the afternoon and evening, scattered thunderstorms may develop along a cold front. The best chance for stronger storms is north of the Omaha metro, but we’ll be watching closely in case the boundary shifts farther south. If storms reach the metro, damaging winds would be the primary threat.

Cooler, more comfortable weather arrives Tuesday and continues through the second half of the week, with better chances for rain Wednesday night through Friday.
