We took a report of a unique scam last week involving a new iPhone Pro that the victim hadn't ordered being sent to his home. The victim started receiving phone calls from someone claiming to work for Verizon. The "Verizon employee" called repeatedly, stated a phone was mistakenly sent to the victim, and asked the victim to let him know when the phone arrived. The "employee" said someone would come pick it up. A second man claiming to work for Verizon's fraud department also repeatedly called the victim, asking for sensitive information.

The victim did the right thing when the phone arrived by contacting the real Verizon and law enforcement. Verizon sent him a return slip for the phone. He then realized multiple other online purchases had been made using his debit card. When asked how scammers may have gotten his card information, the victim said he may have responded to a scam email or clicked on a pop-up advertisement.

Had the scammers been able to follow through, a "courier" would have retrieved the phone from the victim, and the victim would have been out the cost of the iPhone - more than $1,200 - in addition to those fraudulent charges.

If this happens to you, immediately call your financial institution to lock down your account. Then contact law enforcement and your phone carrier.

🚨 "Zoom Meeting" scam targeting real estate agents 🚨

Realtors, have you received a text from a "buyer" relocating from out of state who wants a quick Zoom call to "streamline the process"? It sounds like a great lead, but it could be a trap.

Here are the red flags you need to watch for:

- Typosquatted Link: Scammers are sending fake links that look similar instead of the official `zoom.us`.
- Specific Device Rule: If a lead insists you use a Windows computer (or any other specific device) because their links "don't work" on Mac or mobile, stop. They are likely trying to deliver malware specifically designed for Windows vulnerabilities.
- Urgent Demands: They often push for a meeting within minutes to catch you off guard.

Your email and client data are high-value targets. Don't let a "perfect lead" compromise your entire digital office.

Be on the lookout for this scam going around Kansas City

Be on the lookout for this scam going around Kansas City

The Olathe Police Department has received two reports of a scam that is new to our community and is specifically targeting parents, grandparents, and other family members.

In both Olathe cases, a parent received a phone call from an unknown male claiming the parent’s child had been involved in a crash and was then kidnapped by the male caller. The caller used what appeared to be the child’s voice and demanded immediate payment, while making violent threats of harm if the demands were not met.

In both incidents in Olathe, the children were quickly confirmed to be safe, had not been involved in an accident, and no money was paid to the scammer.

Scams like this are becoming increasingly common. They are designed to exploit a parent’s natural instinct to protect their child, using fear, urgency, and threats to pressure victims into acting quickly without taking time to verify the information.

If you receive a call like this:
• Hang up immediately
• Verify the situation by contacting your child or another trusted family member
• Do not send money
• Call 911 right away

We also recommend setting up a secret code with your family, so if you receive a suspicious call, you can ask for the code to determine if the call is legitimate or a scam.

Please share this post to help inform and protect others in our community.

Just another reminder, the Leawood Police Department will not call you and ask you to take care of your “arrest warrant” with cryptocurrency or gift cards. We continue to take reports of these scams making their way around, and unfortunately more folks have fallen victim.

Urgent Security Update: Instagram Data Breach 🚨

If you’ve recently received a surge of unexpected password reset requests from Instagram, you aren't alone. We are monitoring reports of a significant data breach that has exposed the personal information of 17.5 million users.
Malwarebytes discovered this leak during a routine dark web scan, and it appears tied to a potential API exposure from 2024. The exposed data—which includes usernames, physical addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses—is currently for sale on the dark web. This significantly increases the risk of account takeovers and targeted phishing attacks.
Secure Your Account Now
We recommend you take these steps immediately to protect your digital identity:
1) Change your password to a strong, unique version that you do not use for any other accounts.
2) Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) to add a critical layer of defense against unauthorized access.
3) Review logged-in devices within the Meta Accounts Center to identify and remove any sessions you don't recognize.
4) Ignore/report suspicious reset emails unless you specifically requested them, as these may be tied to the leaked data.

Watch for Scams
Be extra cautious with any incoming emails, text messages, or phone calls. Cybercriminals often use leaked details like your phone number or address to make phishing attempts feel more legitimate. If you receive a suspicious link or an unexpected request for private information, do not click or respond.
