Three spoof magazine ads for the 2023 “Nostalgia” issue of HyeBred Magazine, an annual online publication of creative works from the Armenian diaspora.

It had been a goal of mine to use my art and design work to engage with my Armenian ancestry. My immediate discovery was that I relate to this heritage in a complicated and uncomfortable way. These pieces attempt to scratch at that discomfort, to describe the trivializing distance from which I see what might have been my own culture.

My next discovery was that this is a very common sentiment among the descendants of genocide survivors. I’m grateful to have mustered the courage to be vulnerable with these awkward feelings, and for the incredible kindness and support that the HyeBred team gave me.
