Sadly, this is the reality for business owners relying on public LLMs like ChatGPT, etc. These systems are highly dependent on the skill of the operator to correctly prompt them and even still, can hallucinate and give misinformation.

Big companies train their own models to prevent this - we think small business owners deserve the same!

Tech has a problem. Unsustainable expectations of growth combined with an weaker funding environment have led to the mass “ensh*tification” of tech platforms. The revenue model based on selling ads is fundamentally inequitable and broken. All the major platforms are absolutely infested with bots, fake accounts, and unreliable misinformation. Support and help are nonexistent, or limited to kb articles. Algorithms tuned to distract you rather than show valuable content.

We think that needs to change. Software companies should succeed because they make the best software, solve problems, and make their users’ lives better. We also think that companies that treat their customer’s success as their own tend to do better, have more loyal users, and more sticking power.

Today’s tech model isn’t just stale, it’s toxic. Mining users for data to charge businesses more and more for ads, delivering a product that’s harder to use and less engaging over time. Nobody’s winning but the bankers.

Hive is about helping small business owners even the odds and giving users an experience that doesn’t treat them like a product.

I don’t disagree but, the real question is can any part of it be done ethically? We started Join the Hive because we believe in putting your money where your mouth is and, because yes - it can be ethical and benefit more than a handful of billionaires.

Those billionaires, conversely, can still make a lot of money. More money than almost anyone gets to ever see in their lives. So can investors.

Investors and shareholders are vital but, that is not mutually exclusive with recognizing that people, workers, and stakeholders also matter. It’s not one or the other but the one tenth of one percent of people who control so much of the world’s wealth certainly don’t mind you thinking it is. And that’s a problem. The fact that nearly half of all the wealth in existence belongs to a group of people that could comfortably fit in an off-Broadway theater.

I have always believed that with great privilege comes great responsibility and, the price of that privilege is to help those less privileged and speak up on behalf of those whose voice isn’t being heard. These principles are core beliefs for our company and our product. We believe that by creating value that circulates within neighborhoods and towns, rather then being extracted from them, we can empower entrenpenuers, freelancers, and business owners while delivering consumers a new kind of experience. One free of ads, bots, suspect reviews, and purchased likes.

AI has the potential to fulfill the promise of technology to deliver better lives for everyone and a better planet for us all. Tech does not need to be creepy or dystopian or only benefit a small part of society.
