STOP CALLING EVERY AI CHATBOT AN “AGENT.”

I see this mistake everywhere.

A chatbot ≠ an automation ≠ an AI agent.

Here’s the simplest way I think about it:

→ Chatbot: responds to you
→ Automation: follows predefined rules
→ AI Agent: works toward a goal, chooses actions, uses tools, observes results, and can repeat the process.

The key difference?

Decision-making inside a loop.

An agent doesn’t just give you an answer.

It can:

Goal → Reason → Choose Tool → Act → Observe → Repeat

And that distinction matters when you’re building AI systems for real businesses.

Because putting an LLM inside a workflow doesn’t automatically make it an agent.
