Kirk and Jacob McKinney started Junk Teens in 2021 as teenagers with a single pickup truck. A pair of working speakers found at a dump became $1,000 in Facebook Marketplace sales — and the business grew from there.

When revenue hit $1.2 million, the entire operation still ran on Apple Notes. Jacob was working 12-hour days managing everything himself with no time left to hire or build. The fix: split his role, promote a trusted employee to manager and finally work on the business instead of in it.

From there, the brothers built real systems — software for CRM, scheduling and employee management — and a teenage team member built the company's own app using Base44 and ChatGPT, featuring a leaderboard tracking revenue per hour and closing rates.

They trained employees to film daily operations on Meta Glasses and GoPros, building a social media presence that now has 213,000 TikTok followers, 269,000 on Instagram and 69,000 YouTube subscribers. Social media became both a marketing engine and a culture builder.

Junk Teens hit $3 million in revenue in 2025, operates eight trucks with 25 full-time employees across Greater Boston, Cape Cod and Rhode Island and is projecting $5 million this year. National expansion is next.

Their advice: there's no perfect roadmap. Start anyway.
