Flowers, in celebration of the birthday of Victorian painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. One of his most famous paintings, The Roses of Heliogabalus (1888), depicts a party during the short, four-year reign of this emperor who was known for s*x scandals and religious controversy and was described as a "debauched psychotic." [sound familiar?] Again I'm afraid this painting isn't exactly celebratory. It depicts weary, drunk guests, following one of the emperor's banquets and or**es. Through false panels in the ceiling, he dropped rose petals, ultimately suffocating all of his guests as he watched with amusement. This painting was commissioned in the winter, so Alma-Tadema had numerous shipments of roses sent from the French Riviera so he could capture them with complete accuracy.
