“Writing the book was a fairly long and involved process. It was a rollercoaster—smooth on some days and bumpy on others. Some days were exciting; others were relatively routine. But each session was very rewarding as it encouraged me to research comprehensively and think deeply about the basics, while also clarifying many concepts which I thought I already understood well. It was definitely harder than I had expected.”

“Getting started is more important than striving for perfection. You will be making a huge contribution simply by putting your thoughts out there. Just get started: make a rough plan for your chapters and start writing your first chapter. It doesn't have to be perfect at the outset. After writing three chapters, you may realize that your original plan needs two more chapters—and you can make those changes as you go.”

“After 20+ years working hands-on with master data, I realized something was missing. I had shelves full of books explaining concepts and terminology really well. But when you’re sitting in the middle of:

• unclear ownership
• fragmented systems
• poor data quality
• ERP implementations under pressure
• AI initiatives are struggling because the data foundation is weak

I often lacked a practical guide focused on how to actually solve the problems.

“Because most organizations focus too heavily on just one area: Usually the systems. But successful Master Data Governance depends on three interconnected gears:

⚙️ Systems defines the data architecture, integrations, migration strategy, data flows, lineage, and platform support.
⚙️ Organization defines ownership, roles, responsibilities, governance processes, policies, and decision-making to ensure accountability and a strong data culture.

If one changes, the others must adapt. That’s why many initiatives struggle: they try to fix one gear without adjusting the others.

I often compare it to making coffee:

• Master Data = the beans
• Systems = the machine
• Organization = the people & recipe

Good coffee only happens when all three work together.”

“Two things:

One: Master Data is about business value—not just data. The key is to translate data improvements into measurable business value—ideally, financial. So, Master Data Governance must support:

• Revenue Growth
• Margin Optimization
• Security & Risk Assurance

Otherwise, it risks becoming an internal technical exercise without real business engagement.

Two: Start small—but start right. You don’t solve everything at once. The keys are structured progress, realistic priorities, considering what is right for you, and building momentum step by step.

The philosophy is to start small and work step by step so that your company has the resources to handle and absorb. That’s exactly what the handbook is designed to support.
