If you’re lucky enough to have a collaborator like Matt Hoverman, you’re doin’ okay in this world. Matt and I met on tour with The Acting Companyand became fast friends. Matt’s now an Emmy-Award winning writer with a stable of fantastic work. I like to say his writer’s voice is part Chris Durang, part Sam Shepherd. In Matt’s stage plays, the truthful swings from hilarious to disturbing fly fast and furiously.
His latest play is “Puck’d: A Middle-Aged Summer Night’s Dream” - a sequel to the Bard’s fanciful comedy, is written in (mostly) rhyming couplets, and addresses questions of waning love in our non-fairy world and what kind of “magic” might make love bloom anew. It’s also got tragedy and LOTS of cheese references. December 2023, “Puck’d” received a stellar reading in NYC with our friends at The Acting Company, was directed by John Rando and featured a slew of seriously funny folks.
When creating key art for a work in the readings/workshop/development stage, I believe you’re looking to best encapsulate the energy of the world of the play at THAT STAGE of the your process. When you’re courting producers or getting investors interested, you always want to leave room for their imagination to flourish within your created world.
This design for “Puck’d” is not the Broadway front of house signage, but the design meant to inhabit potential investors’ imagination. Though, I’m very much looking forward to creating that Broadway signage!
