Designing Justice + Designing Spaces’ Mobile Refuge Room gave Reasons to Be Cheerful a story worth telling. It’s a calm, private space for people leaving prison, built with and by formerly incarcerated people.

Most reentry housing assigns your bed, your roommate, your schedule. This room lets you shape your own space instead. You decide who comes in. You close the door.

“Decent housing is foundational to a successful transition home,” said DJDS co-founder Deanna Van Buren. “My job as the architect is to translate your needs and values into physical form. You already know what you want. You already know what you need in an environment.”

In an op-ed for Balls and Strikes, Professor Ava Ayers of PKPR client Albany Law School addressed the Supreme Court’s long history of rationalizing discrimination and argues that the current targeting of trans youth follows a familiar pattern.

Ayers writes, “Earning Americans’ respect also means living in the real world, where facts matter, and not falling for obvious lies. Too often, the Court has willingly embraced falsehoods urged on it by parties making excuses for bigotry. Trans kids are the latest victims of that weaponized gullibility.”
