A quick update for everyone planning to join me this weekend! 🌊

Due to the incoming rainstorm and weather conditions, the opening of Sacred Waters: Rivers of Resilience has been postponed to next Saturday, October 3rd.

Same art. Same island. Same excitement. 😎🌊 Just a new (and hopefully much sunnier!) day to experience it all.

That means you'll have to wait just one more week to meet THE OCEAN KNOWS HER NAME in person, but trust me, she's worth the wait. 🥹🤍

Hey all!! I have some exciting art news! My newest piece, THE OCEAN KNOWS HER NAME, is officially making her debut at Sacred Waters: Rivers of Resilience on Governors Island!

The piece honors Yemayá, the Afro-diasporic expression of the Yoruba orisha Yemọja, whose traditions crossed the Atlantic and continue throughout the Caribbean and beyond. She represents the powerful connection between water, motherhood, protection, and divine feminine energy.

The show opens Sept. 26 from 11–5 at AnkhLave Arts Gallery and runs weekends through Oct. 18. I’d LOVE for everyone to come see her in person. 🥹🫶🏾

And because the timing is absolutely divine, the show runs right into National Samantha Month™ 😂🥳 and closes ON National Samantha Day™ , Oct. 18. Soooo clearly this is the official kickoff to my month.

I’m so excited to share that my newest work, THE OCEAN KNOWS HER NAME, will make its public debut at Sacred Waters: Rivers of Resilience, presented by AnkhLave Arts Alliance, Inc. and curated by Alan Dorsinville Alain Dorsainville

At the center of this piece is Yemayá, the Afro-diasporic expression of the Yoruba orisha Yemọja. Carried across the Atlantic through generations of African descendants, her presence endures throughout the Caribbean and the wider diaspora. She is associated with water, motherhood, protection, fertility, and the powerful, life-giving force of the sea. 🌊

Creating my portrait of her is an act of reverence, honoring the African spiritual traditions our ancestors carried, protected, transformed, and kept alive across oceans.

So for The Ocean Knows Her Name to make her debut in an exhibition exploring African spirituality across the Diaspora feels incredibly divine 🫶🏾

Con amor, del Caribe. 🌺🌴

For me, Hispanic Heritage Month isn’t just about celebrating where we come from; it’s about celebrating the fullness of where we come from.

The color. The food. The music. The landscapes. The spirituality. The aunties. The ancestors. The joy. & especially the Blackness that has always been woven into the story of Latin America and the Caribbean.

A lot of my work has quietly been telling that story for years. From Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic to pieces inspired by Afro-Caribbean womanhood, spirituality, nature and ancestral memory, these works are little love letters to the cultures that continue to shape me as an artist.

So for Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m putting them all in one place. For anyone who has ever looked at a piece of art and thought:

damn…that feels like home.
