ULURU Empowering families and students to address academic challenges throughout their educational journeys

The studying happened. The effort was real. The material was just for last week.

This is a planning and organization gap. Not knowing how to verify what actually needs to be done before doing it is one of the most common and most fixable executive function challenges in students.

That is exactly why Uluru exists.

They had it the night before. You quizzed them. They got everything right.
Then the test started and it was gone.

That is not nerves. That is a retrieval gap. The brain stored it under low-pressure conditions and could not access it under high-pressure ones. Building that retrieval muscle is what Uluru is designed to do.

The project was good. The work was real. And it came back ungraded because of one missing line at the top.

This is not carelessness. This is a self-checking gap. The brain finished the hard thing and shut off before the simple thing. That is exactly how executive function works when it has not been trained to close the loop.

You told them. Clearly. Twice.

And ten minutes later they were back asking the same question.
Working memory is the brain's ability to hold and use information while doing something else with it. When it is weak, instructions disappear the moment attention shifts. That is a skill gap not an attitude and it is one Uluru was built around.

The tutor sessions go great. The grades reflect it. Then the tutor leaves and everything unravels.

Because the tutor was doing the executive function work for them. The planning. The prompting. The keeping track of where they were.
Without that external structure, the student has nothing to fall back on.

Building that internal structure is exactly what Uluru does.

Almost done is the most optimistic sentence a student will ever say.

It means they thought about starting. They planned to start. In their mind, thinking about it counted for something.
Task initiation does not begin in the mind. It begins with the first action. And that first action is a skill that has to be explicitly built.

That is exactly why Uluru exists.

Done. Submitted. Moving on.

And somewhere in the rush to be finished, the instructions went unread, the work went unchecked, and the errors went unfixed.
Speed without self-monitoring is just confident mistakes. Teaching students to pause before they submit is a skill. And it is one that changes everything that comes after it.

That is exactly why Uluru exists.

Understanding why task switching and transitions are so hard for will help parents support their students during these difficult moments. An awareness of liminal spaces is the key.

They got it. Every single time you walked them through it.

And then you stepped back and it was gone.
That is not a content problem. That is a transfer problem. The brain understood it in context. It never learned how to access it independently.

That is the skill Uluru builds.

Sometimes it’s hard to quantify the type of student who is able to succeed in getting into a selective school like Hotchkiss.

However, here are a few characteristics that are usually invisible upon first glance. After years of working with students and helping them to get into selective schools, I’ve certainly noticed some commonalities.
