After 11 years of simplifying complex tech, one thing hasn’t changed: people respond to seeing an idea, not hearing about it.

That’s why one of our mantras here at GDS is: “It’s easier to criticize something that exists than something that does not.”

A big part of the work we do is figuring out how to materialize abstract, complex concepts into simple diagrams, sketches, or visuals that people can understand and react to.

Even a rough concept gives everyone something tangible to point to, question, and improve. That has made a tremendous difference in getting more useful feedback earlier, especially when ideas are still nebulous.

But there’s a catch: visualization can work almost too well.

Once people can see something, they naturally start judging what’s in front of them. A rough concept can easily be mistaken for a proposed final solution, when its real purpose is to make an idea tangible enough to kick around, challenge, and refine.

So the work isn’t just making complex ideas visible. It’s also helping people understand what they’re being asked to react to at each stage.
