When did being visible become the same thing as being valuable?

For decades, seeing people work was one of the easiest ways for leaders to evaluate commitment. Today, that's a much less reliable measure. An employee may automate hours of repetitive work. Mentor a colleague remotely. Solve a customer problem between flights. Collaborate with a team across three continents. None of it necessarily looks like working harder. All of it can create tremendous value. As the workplace changes, leaders need to make sure they're recognizing contribution, not simply visible effort.

Our latest blog looks at what Baby Boomers got right about work ethic, and why today's leaders need to build upon that legacy rather than abandon it.

Baby Boomers didn't invent work ethic. They redefined it.

Show up early. Stay late. Take on the difficult assignment. Be dependable. Put in the time. For the workplace Baby Boomers entered, these weren't outdated ideas. They were some of the clearest ways employees demonstrated commitment, and they helped build many of the organizations we know today. The problem isn't that those values stopped mattering. It's that work changed.

Today, extraordinary contribution can happen from a home office, an airport, across time zones, or in 30 minutes with technology instead of three hours using an old process.

Commitment still matters. We just need to get better at recognizing what it looks like now.

High performers often get rewarded with more work instead of more appreciation. The employees who consistently step up, solve problems, mentor others and deliver results can also be some of the easiest to overlook.

Recognition makes their contributions visible and helps top talent feel valued before added responsibility turns into burnout.

With Maestro, organizations can make recognition timely, visible, meaningful and measurable, connecting appreciation to the moments that matter most.

See how recognition can help protect your high performers.

Every generation thinks the next generation has a work ethic problem.

Baby Boomers were once criticized for challenging traditional corporate norms. Gen X was labeled skeptical and overly independent. Millennials were called entitled. Now Gen Z is accused of not wanting to work. Maybe the problem isn't work ethic. Maybe our definition of work ethic keeps changing. Every generation entered a different workplace, adapted to different realities and learned different lessons about what commitment looks like.

Our latest position paper, The Work Ethic Myth, looks beyond the stereotypes to ask a more useful question:

Instead of debating which generation works hardest, should we be defining what great work looks like today?

The most valuable work often doesn't appear in a dashboard. It's the employee who mentors new hires. The teammate everyone relies on. The person holding a struggling project together. Data matters. Human context matters more.
